Which is the busiest airport in the UK?
Heathrow is the busiest airport in the UK with 84,462,273 terminal passengers in 2025, almost double Gatwick’s 42,769,164. Four of the five busiest UK airports serve London; Manchester, in third place with 32,061,307, is the only exception in the top five.
| Rank · airport | Passengers 2025 | Change on 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Heathrow | 84,462,273 | +0.7% |
| 2. Gatwick | 42,769,164 | -1.1% |
| 3. Manchester | 32,061,307 | +4.2% |
| 4. Stansted | 29,758,490 | +0.2% |
| 5. Luton | 17,768,944 | +4.9% |
| 6. Edinburgh | 16,969,731 | +7.5% |
| 7. Birmingham | 13,660,382 | +6.3% |
| 8. Bristol | 10,832,713 | +2.1% |
| 9. Glasgow | 8,205,280 | +1.7% |
| 10. Belfast International | 6,677,021 | -1.1% |
Passenger counts are terminal passengers, the CAA’s standard measure: everyone who boards or leaves an aircraft at the airport. Transit passengers who stay on board are excluded. Heathrow’s total including transit was 84,481,178, and the rank order does not change on either measure.
- Heathrow handles 28% of all UK air passengers and 47% of London’s. The next four London airports together carry fewer people than Heathrow alone.
- Gatwick fell 1.1% in 2025 while Luton rose 4.9% and London City 4.6%. Luton and Stansted both moved above their 2019 level; Gatwick and City did not.
- London City is the smallest of the five at 3,737,888, about one twenty-second of Heathrow, yet it grew faster than any London airport except Luton in 2025.

How have London airport passenger numbers changed since 2015?
London’s airports carried 178,496,759 passengers in 2025 against 178,921,839 in 2019, so the system is back to 99.8% of its pre-pandemic size. The recovery is uneven: Heathrow is +4.4% on 2019 and Stansted +5.8%, while Gatwick is still -8.2% and London City -27.0%.
| Airport | 2015 | 2019 | 2024 | 2025 | 2025 vs 2019 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heathrow | 74,953,708 | 80,886,589 | 83,857,297 | 84,462,273 | +4.4% |
| Gatwick | 40,260,068 | 46,574,786 | 43,242,155 | 42,769,164 | -8.2% |
| Stansted | 22,513,443 | 28,124,292 | 29,694,312 | 29,758,490 | +5.8% |
| Luton | 12,262,581 | 18,213,901 | 16,937,118 | 17,768,944 | -2.4% |
| London City | 4,319,301 | 5,122,271 | 3,573,250 | 3,737,888 | -27.0% |
| All five | 154,309,101 | 178,921,839 | 177,304,132 | 178,496,759 | -0.2% |
Over ten years the growth came from the north and east. Luton added 5,506,363 passengers between 2015 and 2025 (45%) and Stansted 7,245,047 (32%), while Heathrow grew 13% inside a two-runway limit. For a chauffeur company that means more arrivals on the M1 and M11 corridors, which our hour-by-hour journey-time study covers separately.
Where do London’s air passengers fly to and from?
Dublin is the busiest single route from London with 4,523,505 passengers in 2025, Dubai is second with 3,920,883 and New York JFK third with 3,540,011. By country the United States leads with 19,127,361 passengers, ahead of Spain with 15,806,156 on the mainland and Italy with 12,126,862.
| Route | Passengers 2025 |
|---|---|
| 1. London – Dublin, Ireland | 4,523,505 |

The route list explains why arrivals halls look the way they do. Short European city routes fill Stansted, Luton and Gatwick with day-return and weekend traffic. The long-haul routes, which bring the passengers who book a car in advance, run almost entirely through Heathrow: 3,540,011 of the JFK passengers and 2,539,946 of the Dubai passengers used Heathrow.

The UAE remains the largest Gulf market at 5,068,718 passengers, flat on the year, and Qatar the second at 2,476,420 (+5.0%). Eight in ten Gulf passengers land at Heathrow, which is why our Heathrow meet and greet with fast track exists: the immigration queue is the slowest part of a Gulf arrival, not the road.
| Country | Passengers 2025 | Change on 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| UAE | 5,068,718 | -0.3% |
| Qatar | 2,476,420 | +5.0% |

Tripyana’s own bookings follow the same map. Most of our Arabic-speaking guests arrive at Heathrow on the Riyadh, Jeddah, Dubai and Doha flights, and most of their transfers end in Mayfair, Knightsbridge or Kensington. The Saudi growth in the table is the single biggest change we saw in 2025.

How much does it cost to get from Heathrow into central London?
The cheapest way from Heathrow into central London is the Piccadilly line at £5.90 with contactless, and the most expensive is a metered black cab at up to £120 in traffic. Between them sit the Elizabeth line at £15.50 to Zone 1, the Heathrow Express at £26 on the day, and a pre-booked chauffeur at a fixed £125 for the whole car.
| Option | Fare | Time | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Piccadilly line (Tube) | £5.90 | about 50 minutes to Paddington | TfL single fare finder |
| Elizabeth line | £14.60 to Paddington · £15.50 to any Zone 1 station | about 30 minutes | TfL single fare finder |
| Heathrow Express | £26 on the day · from £10 booked 30+ days ahead | 15 minutes to Paddington | Heathrow Express |
| Black cab (metered) | £70–£120 | 30–60 minutes | TfL taxi fares, from 25 April 2026 |
| Pre-booked chauffeur, Mercedes E-Class | £125 fixed, door to door | 35–68 minutes by hour | Tripyana fixed fares |
The public transport fares are per person and end at a station. The taxi and chauffeur fares are per car and end at your door, so for a family of four with luggage the gap closes quickly: four Elizabeth line tickets to Zone 1 cost £62 before the walk or cab from the station. The Heathrow transfer page lists every vehicle class at the fixed fare.
Two charges sit on top of any car journey. The Congestion Charge is £18 a day inside central London, 07:00–18:00 on weekdays and 12:00–18:00 at weekends, which most Mayfair and Knightsbridge hotels fall inside. And every London airport except City now charges cars to enter the terminal forecourt, covered in the next table.

What are the airport drop-off charges in 2026?
Dropping someone at the terminal door costs between £7 and £10 at Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton in September 2026, and all four zones are camera-enforced with payment due by midnight the next day. Stansted raised its charge on 19 March 2026 and now bills a stop longer than 15 minutes at almost three times the basic fee.
| Airport | Charge | Free alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Heathrow | £7 per entry, 24 hours a day | Long Stay car parks (free drop-off) |
| Gatwick | £10 for 10 minutes, then £1 a minute to 20; maximum £30 and 30 minutes | Long Stay car parks |
| Stansted | £10 for up to 15 minutes, £28 over 15 minutes (from 19 March 2026) | Mid Stay car park, free shuttle |
| Luton | £9 for 12 minutes, then £1 a minute; 30-minute maximum | Long Stay car park, free for 2 hours |
Unpaid charges become penalty notices at Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, so the fee is only the start of the risk for a friend doing a favour. A licensed chauffeur pays the charge and builds it into the fare; a Tripyana fixed price includes forecourt charges, parking for the meet and greet, and 60 minutes of waiting after landing.
The charges also change which door you use. At Heathrow the Terminal 5 and Terminal 2 forecourts are the quickest places to load a car; at Gatwick the 10-minute clock at the South Terminal means a driver who arrives early waits in the short-stay car park and comes forward when you text. Our Gatwick transfer page explains the meeting point.
How long does the drive from the airport into London take?
The drive from Heathrow to Park Lane takes 35 minutes at 01:00 and 68 minutes at 08:00 on a September weekday, according to 384 Google Routes API predictions that Tripyana collected for every hour of the day. Gatwick ranges from 77 to 132 minutes, the widest swing of the four airports.
| Airport | Road miles | Fastest hour | Slowest hour | Weekday average |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heathrow | 16 | 01:00 · 35 min | 08:00 · 68 min | 45 min |
| Gatwick | 57 | 03:00 · 77 min | 07:00 · 132 min | 93 min |
| Stansted | 41 | 02:00 · 64 min | 07:00 · 111 min | 82 min |
| Luton | 33 | 02:00 · 51 min | 07:00 · 81 min | 61 min |
The table is the summary of a larger study with a row for every hour, a Saturday set and the return direction, published on our airport journey times by hour page with the raw CSV. The pattern matters more than any single figure: a Gulf flight landing at 06:30 meets both the immigration peak and the morning road peak, while the same flight at 22:00 meets neither.
How many licensed taxis and private hire vehicles serve London?
London had 112,418 licensed private hire drivers, 94,495 private hire vehicles and 1,870 private hire operators in the week ending 6 September 2026, against 15,728 taxi drivers and 13,401 black cabs, according to Transport for London’s weekly licensing figures. Private hire drivers outnumber black cab drivers seven to one.
- England as a whole had 290,000 licensed private hire vehicles on 1 April 2026, up 13% on 2024, while licensed taxis fell 7% to 52,300 (Department for Transport, published 13 August 2026). London holds roughly a third of the country’s private hire fleet.
- Driver licences across England reached 417,300, up 9% in two years. In London TfL issued 255 new private hire driver licences in a single week in September 2026.
- A chauffeur company is a licensed private hire operator with its own vehicle and driver licences. Tripyana Ltd is one of those licensed operators, based by Heathrow; every car on this site is a licensed private hire vehicle with a licensed driver, tracked to the flight it is meeting.
The numbers explain the gap between a booked car and a car hailed at the kerb. Black cabs can be flagged down and use the meter; private hire vehicles, including every chauffeur car, must be pre-booked through an operator and quote the fare in advance. That rule is why the fixed prices on the London airport transfer page are the price you pay.
