Cathedral city on the way home
Winchester Cathedral is 21 miles south of Highclere. A two-hour stop makes a nine-hour day: one extra hour on the booking.
Market town, 7 miles away
An hour in Newbury, about 15 minutes from the castle gates, fits the eight hours at no extra cost.
Highclere sits 67 miles west of Mayfair; the last stretch leaves the motorway for country roads. The castle asks drivers to follow the brown signs rather than the sat nav; our chauffeurs know the visitor entrance.
From Heathrow Terminal 5 the castle is 49 miles, so guests landing in the morning can visit the same afternoon.
What will Downton Abbey fans recognise at Highclere Castle?
Almost everything above stairs. The first series was filmed at Highclere in 2010; the show ran six years and the films followed.
- The grand staircase — Lady Mary’s descent on her wedding day; every tour walks down it.
- The State Dining Room — where the Dowager Countess, played by Dame Maggie Smith, delivered her sharpest lines.
- Jackdaws Castle — the folly where Lady Edith so often sat, with the classic view back to the house.
- Lady Mary’s bench and the Secret Garden — in the gardens, which every admission ticket includes.
- The bedrooms and the cellars — the stairs down lead to the old staff quarters and the Egyptian Exhibition.
- Photographs — welcome on the lawns and grounds, not inside the castle.
The house has between 250 and 300 rooms; the tour covers the main state rooms, some bedrooms and the cellars. The parkland was laid out by Capability Brown in 1771. In November 1922 the 5th Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter opened Tutankhamun’s tomb; six rooms of the exhibition follow that discovery.

When is Highclere Castle open, and what should we know?
Not every day. Highclere is a family home and opens on set dates: two general-admission seasons, plus guided tours on selected days between them.
- Public opening:the Easter and summer holidays; the official ticket store lists March to June and July to September for 2027.
- Guided tours:film-set tours in autumn 2026 and wintertime tours in January 2027; Christmas at Highclere runs 18 November to 19 December 2026.

Can we add Bath or Stonehenge to the Highclere day?

Which car suits a family of five?

What can I bring into Highclere Castle?
Less than you might expect. Large bags and backpacks are not allowed in the grounds, and photography is not permitted inside the castle. Dogs are not admitted except assistance dogs; pushchairs may be left in the front hall. With a private car everything stays in the boot until you return.
