Highclere sits 67 miles west of Mayfair, about an hour and a half on a weekday morning by our timed drives from central London; the last stretch leaves the motorway for country roads. Not every day. Highclere is a family home and opens on set dates: two general-admission seasons, plus guided tours on selected days between them.
