The Lake District from your London door.
One long day or two with an overnight — you set the stops.
- From £1,145 per car · day trip or 2–3 days
UK-licensed operatorTripyana’s Lake District tours from London start at your London hotel: about five hours by car each way to Windermere, Grasmere and Keswick with one private chauffeur. Choose one long day of about 14 hours from £1,145 per car, or two days with a night in the Lakes from £1,840 in an E‑Class, the driver’s overnight included.
How does a private Lake District tour from London work?
A private driver collects you from your London hotel in a Mercedes and drives you to the Lake District, about 5 hours by car to Windermere. Choose one long day there and back, or two days with a night by the lakes. One price covers the whole car, not each person.
Door to door
Pickup at your hotel, home or Heathrow terminal at the hour you choose. The car sets you down at each pier and village, not at a meeting point.
The driver waits
Take a cruise, a walk or a long lunch. The car waits, or meets you where the boat lands, and the route is timed around any ticket slot you hold.
Your stops, on the day
Stay longer at Grasmere, skip a lake, add a viewpoint. Tell the driver and the plan changes.
Only your party
No shared seats and no fixed departure dates. One traveller or seven, the trip runs on the day you pick.
How much is a private Lake District tour from London?

One long day or two: the plan hour by hour
Each leg between London and Windermere takes about 5 hours, a comfort stop included. A day trip is possible but long, about 14 hours door to door. Two days give you the northern lakes too, with no early start on the way home. The times below are a working plan; you can move any stop.
Windermere and Grasmere
- 07:00 Pickup at your London hotel.
- ~12:00 Bowness on Windermere: the piers, a cruise and lunch.
- ~14:00 Ambleside and Rydal Water, then Grasmere village and the lake shore.
- ~16:00 Leave Grasmere for the drive south.
- ~21:00 Back at your London hotel.
Southern lakes, then the north
- Day 1: Pickup 08:00, Windermere by about 13:00. Cruise, Orrest Head or Ambleside, then your hotel by early evening.
- Day 2: From 09:00: Grasmere, Keswick and Derwentwater, then Ullswater. Leave about 16:00, London about 21:00.
Time for Beatrix Potter or the high valleys
- Day 1: London to Windermere, as on the two-day plan.
- Day 2: Hawkshead, Hill Top and Coniston Water, or Borrowdale and the Honister Pass to Buttermere.
- Day 3: The northern lakes, then home by about 21:00. Or cross the Yorkshire Dales to York for the afternoon on a longer last day.

Which plan suits you?
The long day covers the southern lakes and suits adults who want a single big day out. With children, or in winter when the light goes early, two days are easier: about four hours by the water on day one, a full day on day two, and the longest leg of the drive split across both. Three days add a slow day with no motorway at all. On the longer plans you choose the hotel; Bowness, Windermere, Ambleside and Keswick all work as a base.
Driving on to the Highlands? Windermere makes a natural first night on our private Scotland tour from London.
Where to spend your time in the Lakes
The National Park is too big for one trip. Four areas give a first visit the clearest picture, and the car links them without backtracking.
- Windermere and Bowness. England’s largest lake and the first stop after the drive. The piers and the lakeside promenade suit every age, and the 20-minute climb to Orrest Head gives the view over the whole lake.
- Ambleside and Grasmere. Stone villages a few minutes apart, with little Rydal Water between them. Wordsworth’s grave is in St Oswald’s churchyard, and Sarah Nelson’s gingerbread shop has baked by its gate since 1854.
- Keswick and Derwentwater. The market town of the north, with fells rising straight from the water. Castlerigg stone circle is 5 minutes away; Ashness Bridge and Surprise View look down over the whole lake.
- Ullswater. A long, quieter lake under high fells. Aira Force, a 65-foot waterfall, is a 15 to 20-minute walk from its car park, and the road over the Kirkstone Pass, the highest in the Lakes, links Ullswater with Ambleside.

With one day, keep to Windermere and Grasmere. With two, add Keswick and Ullswater. With children, Brockhole on Windermere has lakeside grounds, indoor play and a café, and the car carries coats and snacks between stops.
Tickets, cruises and seasons
Three visits need checking before you fix your dates. Book these tickets yourself on the official sites; send us your times and we build the route around them.
Windermere Lake Cruises
From Bowness, the Islands cruise is a 45-minute loop. The Red cruise sails on to Waterhead at Ambleside, where the car can collect you. The winter timetable runs from 2 November 2026 to 23 March 2027, with fewer sailings, so take the boat in the morning. There are no sailings on 25 December.
Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s house
Entry is by timed ticket booked in advance, for everyone including National Trust members, and slots open about two weeks ahead. The car park is tiny, so being dropped at the door helps. Festive opening runs from 7 November to 13 December 2026; the house then closes and reopens in spring. In the meantime, The World of Beatrix Potter in Bowness is a good swap.
Dove Cottage, Wordsworth’s home
In Grasmere, with timed entry. Winter hours run until the end of June 2027: Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 to 16:00, closed Sunday and Monday. In July and August it opens daily. Plan a Grasmere day for Tuesday to Saturday if the house matters to you.
- May, June and September: the best months. Long light, everything open and quieter roads than August.
- July and August: the warmest weeks and the busiest. School holidays fill Bowness and the lakeside car parks.
- October: copper bracken on the fells and thinner crowds.
- November to March: empty shores and snow on the tops, but sunset comes around 16:00 and high passes such as Kirkstone can close in ice. The driver then keeps to the valley roads, and two days make better use of the light.

Christmas and New Year
Our drivers work on 25 December, so a festive trip can use Christmas Day for the drive north. Plan 26 December around Windermere, when boats sail again, and keep the literary homes for another season, since both close over the holiday.
Watch the trip before you book
A short film that follows the trip in order: your London hotel pickup, about five hours north by car, Windermere and Ambleside, Grasmere and the Kirkstone Pass to Ullswater, then Keswick, Derwentwater and Castlerigg on the two-day plan.
Car, luggage, children and easy access
The E-Class suits two or three travellers with light luggage. The V-Class suits families and groups of four to seven.
Six people with six large cases fill a V-Class; a seventh passenger means one case fewer. Seats and boot space are on the Mercedes V-Class page. An S-Class is available for rear-seat comfort, and a Range Rover takes four large cases. Cases stay locked in the boot all day, so you can end the trip at a new hotel or carry on north.
Wet boots and coats ride in the boot between stops, and a folded pushchair fits beside the cases. With young children, tell us their ages and we time the stops around meals and rests.
Our Mercedes cars are not wheelchair-accessible vehicles, so each guest moves to a normal seat; a folding wheelchair or walker travels in the boot and the driver helps at every stop. The National Park grades its easy, stile-free paths as Miles without Stiles routes, such as the short lakeside walk from Bowness to Cockshott Point.

Questions about Lake District tours from London
Is the Lake District too far for a day trip from London?
It is a long day, not an impossible one. You leave at 07:00, spend about four hours at Windermere and Grasmere, and are back around 21:00. With children, or from November to March, two days with one night are easier and leave time for Keswick and Ullswater.
How far is the Lake District from London by car?
Windermere is about 270 miles from central London, roughly 5 hours by car each way. The Lake District is in Cumbria, in north-west England, not in Scotland.
Is the price per car or per person?
Per car. Four people pay the same as one in the same vehicle. The price includes the chauffeur, fuel, parking, tolls and, on the two- and three-day trips, the driver’s own room for each night, so you never book or pay for it.
Who books our hotel and tickets?
You do, so you keep the choice of hotel and rate. Bowness or Windermere suits a single night; Keswick suits a second night in the north. Send us the hotel address and any ticket times, and the driver plans each day around them.
Can the driver wait while we take a lake cruise or a walk?
Yes. Waiting is part of the trip, not an extra. For a one-way cruise or a walk, you agree a meeting point and the car collects you at the far end, for example at Waterhead pier in Ambleside.
Can we visit Hill Top or Dove Cottage?
Yes, both fit the route: Hill Top near the west shore of Windermere, Dove Cottage in Grasmere. Both use timed tickets, so book your slot first and send us the time. Opening dates are in the tickets section above.
What can we do on a rainy day in the Lake District?
Rain is common in any month, so pack a waterproof layer and walking shoes. Indoor swaps close to Windermere include The World of Beatrix Potter in Bowness, the Lakes Aquarium at Lakeside and Wray Castle. A cruise boat with a covered deck still works in light rain.
How many lakes are in the Lake District?
Only one, Bassenthwaite Lake, has the word “Lake” in its name. The others are called meres, waters or tarns, such as Windermere, Ullswater, Derwentwater and Tarn Hows.
Do you provide child seats?
Yes, for every age and at no charge. Tell us each child’s age when you book, and the right baby seat, child seat or booster is fitted before pickup.
Can the trip end in York, Edinburgh or Manchester instead of London?
Yes. Your luggage rides with you, so the car can take you on from the Lakes to York, Edinburgh or Manchester, or start there and finish in London. Send us the route and we price it as one figure; for a longer Scottish trip, see our Scotland tour.
Windermere by Thursday lunch, back by Friday night.
