When is the best time for the cliffs, and what should we know?
April to October for the clifftop walk. The Cathedral works in any month; Dover Castle opens at weekends only in November and December.

How much time do you need in Canterbury, and what fits in it?
About three hours on the standard day in Canterbury: the Cathedral first, then the old town and lunch. Want four? Start earlier or leave out the castle.
- The Becket story:four knights murdered Archbishop Thomas Becket inside his own cathedral on 29 December 1170, after his quarrel with Henry II; the Pope made him a saint in 1173.
- Trinity Chapel:his relics lay here in a jewelled shrine from 1220 until Henry VIII’s commissioners destroyed it in 1538, and pilgrims came for more than 300 years.
- Cathedral tickets:entry is ticketed, and booking online gives fast-track entry. The doors open at 10:00 Monday to Saturday; on Sunday the church opens at 12:30, after morning worship.

Where is the best place to see the White Cliffs of Dover?
From the top, at the National Trust visitor centre on Langdon Cliffs; from below, on the beach at St Margaret’s Bay. Your driver can take you to both in one afternoon.
- Langdon Cliffs, by the visitor centre:the National Trust car park sits on the clifftop, and the first viewpoint looks straight down on the ferries in Dover harbour.
- The path to South Foreland Lighthouse:the clifftop trail runs east over open grassland to a Victorian lighthouse; the sea and the chalk edge stay on your right.
- St Margaret’s Bay:a shingle beach a short drive east, where you stand beneath the cliffs and see their full height from below.
- Samphire Hoe:a seafront park west of Dover, built from Channel Tunnel chalk, looking back at Shakespeare Cliff.
- Dover Castle ramparts:the castle stands on the same cliffs; the walls look over the harbour and the tunnels are cut into the rock.

Inside Dover Castle, the Secret Wartime Tunnels are where the 1940 Dunkirk evacuation was directed. The Great Tower of Henry II stands above them, so allow the full 90 minutes for both.
Visiting Canterbury and Dover in November and December
From 2 November to 23 December 2026, Dover Castle opens on Saturdays and Sundays only. Hours are 10:00 to 16:00, with last entry at 15:00.
Booking a weekday in those weeks? The day keeps the Cathedral and the clifftop, and the castle gives way to Whitstable harbour instead.

- On the cliffs:the visitor centre and toilets sit beside the car park, and benches along the path give a rest with a view. The open clifftop beyond the first viewpoint is grass and uneven, so many guests stop there.

What happens to the day if it rains or the cliffs are in fog?
Most of this day is spent under cover. The Cathedral, the Great Tower and the wartime tunnels at Dover Castle are all indoors. Only the clifftop walk really depends on the sky.
Sea fog can hide France and the chalk faces below you. After rain, the grass path towards the lighthouse turns muddy and slippery. The paved path to the first viewpoint still works, and the view starts five minutes from the car.
On a grey coastal morning, the order can turn round. The castle comes first, then the cliffs once the sky clears. The car is never far away, so a passing shower costs very little time.

What else is inside Dover Castle besides the wartime tunnels?
Most visitors head straight for the tunnels and the keep. Yet the oldest stones on Castle Hill stand a short walk away, on the high ground east of the Great Tower.
The Roman pharos is a lighthouse built in the first century AD to guide ships into the river mouth below. It once rose to about 24 metres, and it is the oldest surviving lighthouse in the country. A twin tower stood on the Western Heights across the valley.
Beside it stands St Mary in Castro, a Saxon church from around AD 1000. Its builders turned the Roman tower into a bell tower, so the two buildings stand joined together.
Both lie inside the castle walls, so your castle ticket covers them. Allow 20 minutes for the pair, then look south from the churchyard: the harbour and the Channel spread out below. The church is still in use, so access to the interior can vary; check before you travel.

Yes. Leeds Castle fits best in the morning on the way down, and Whitstable is 20 minutes from Canterbury; either fits the day within the agreed hours. Both together need an extra hour, added on the booking form at a fixed hourly rate.
How much walking is involved at the White Cliffs?
As little or as much as you like. The first viewpoint is five minutes from the National Trust car park on a surfaced path; the walk towards the South Foreland lighthouse takes about 45 minutes each way on grass.

Yes. Cancel at least 24 hours before pickup and any card payment is refunded in full; inside 24 hours the fare is charged. Pay by card in the booking form when you book, or choose cash and settle with the driver in pounds sterling on the day.
Is the driver also a tour guide?
