Why a private driver

Why choose a private driver for Scotland?

Our Scotland tours from London begin at your own hotel door, on the date you pick. One chauffeur and one Mercedes cover the whole trip: north through England, round the Highlands and back south, or on to a Scottish airport for your flight home.

Door to door

Pickup at your London hotel or an airport terminal. Each morning starts at the door of the hotel you chose.

The same chauffeur all week

Your driver loads the cases at each hotel, parks at every sight and knows your plan by day two.

Your pace, your stops

Stay longer at Loch Ness, skip a castle, add a photo stop. Tell the driver the evening before and the day changes.

One price for the car

The figure covers the car, not each seat, so a family of six pays the same as a couple in the same vehicle.

3, 4 and 5-day plans

3, 4 or 5 days: the Scotland tour itinerary day by day

Three days for Edinburgh, four to add Loch Ness and Glencoe, five for Skye. Every leg below can move to suit your dates.

3 days

Edinburgh and the road north

  1. Day 1: London → York → Edinburgh by early evening, a long day of about ten hours.
  2. Day 2: Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile and Calton Hill; Rosslyn Chapel or Stirling Castle after lunch.
  3. Day 3: Edinburgh → Alnwick → London, another long day, or a drop-off at Edinburgh Airport.
5 days

The Highlands and the Isle of Skye

  1. Day 1: London → York → Edinburgh.
  2. Day 2: Pitlochry and the Cairngorms → Inverness.
  3. Day 3: Loch Ness → Eilean Donan Castle → the Skye Bridge → Portree.
  4. Day 4: The Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing → Glencoe → Fort William.
  5. Day 5: Loch Lomond → Glasgow Airport, quoted with the driver’s drive home. Driving back with us? Add a night in the Lake District on the way south.

A typical Highland day

After day one, most days hold 3 to 5 hours in the car, split into two or three legs with sights in between. You are set down at each entrance while the driver parks nearby, and you reach the next hotel by late afternoon. Single-track roads on Skye and around Glencoe take longer than the distance suggests, so the driver plans them for daylight. Skye needs no ferry: the bridge has been toll-free since 2004.

Edinburgh as your base instead

If the city is the goal, the driver takes you north, stays for the Edinburgh days and brings you home. You unpack once. The day-two sights each get more time, and St Andrews, for the Old Course and the cathedral ruins, is about 1 hour 30 minutes away. Two city days make it a four-day trip.

Whisky, clan lands and London in one trip

Speyside has more working distilleries than any other part of Scotland, about an hour east of Inverness. The signposted Malt Whisky Trail links seven of them, and two or three visits fill a relaxed day with one extra night near Aberlour or Elgin. Book each tour slot yourselves; the driver never drinks on duty, and nobody under 18 can taste.

Tracing family roots? Send the surname and any clan name. The ScotlandsPeople Centre in Edinburgh holds birth, marriage and census records, Culloden Battlefield is about 15 minutes from Inverness, and the Clan Donald centre sits at Armadale on Skye.

A week covers three London days and the 4-day plan, with the same car from the first London morning; our 3-day London itinerary by private car sets out that half.

The drive north

The drive north: York or Durham on day one

Edinburgh is about 400 miles from London, or 7 to 8 hours of driving. With a two-hour stop in York, day one runs to about ten hours door to door, so the hours past nine apply. Prefer a gentler start? Sleep in York or Durham and reach Edinburgh on day two.

Aerial view of York Minster, a two-hour stop on the drive from London to Edinburgh
  • York, about 4 hours from London: the Minster, the Shambles and the city walls.
  • Durham, 45 minutes further: cathedral and castle above the river.
  • Alnwick, 1 hour north of Durham: the castle filmed as Hogwarts.
  • Bamburgh, 20 minutes on: a castle above the beach, 1 hour 45 minutes from Edinburgh.

A different way home

The drive south can take the west side. Hadrian’s Wall runs east from Carlisle, just over the border, and a night at Windermere splits the journey; see our Lake District tour with a private driver for that stretch. Chester or Stratford-upon-Avon can fill the last day before London.

Only need the road itself? The one-way London to Edinburgh chauffeur takes you door to door in a single day.

What the price covers

What’s included in the price, and what’s not

Everything the car and the chauffeur need on the road is in the figure. Your own rooms, meals and tickets stay yours to choose.

Included

  • Mercedes and chauffeur from the London pickup to the last drop-off.
  • Fuel, parking and tolls, including city-centre parking in York and Edinburgh.
  • The driver’s hotel and meals, at £249 for each night in Scotland; no per-diem line later.
  • Stops and detours within each day’s nine hours.
  • The drive back to London on the last day, which the prices assume.

Not included

  • Your hotels. Book where you like and send us the addresses.
  • Meals along the way.
  • Tickets for castles, distilleries and trains. We suggest timings; you book.
Car, cases and children

Vehicle, luggage and children

The E-Class suits two or three travellers with light luggage. The V-Class suits families and groups, from four people up to seven.

Six people with six large cases fill a V-Class; a seventh seat means one case fewer. Seating and boot details are on the Mercedes V-Class page. Cases stay locked in the boot all day, so keep a small day bag for coats, cameras and medicines. Planning to buy whisky? Tell us roughly how many bottles and we leave room.

With children, the driver keeps a stop every 1 hour 30 minutes on the longer legs. Rain on Skye is normal in any month, and a viewpoint can swap for a castle at no cost.

When to go

When is the best time to visit Scotland?

May to June and September to October. Met Office climate records show spring and early summer as the driest part of the Highland year, and June has 17 hours of daylight. Autumn is quieter.

  • August: Edinburgh’s festivals fill the city; book hotels three months ahead.
  • November to February: daylight ends before 16:00 and Highland roads can close in snow, so keep a spare day.

Christmas market and Hogmanay

Edinburgh’s Christmas market in East Princes Street Gardens runs from 14 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with free entry, so it fits any Edinburgh day. Edinburgh Castle closes on 25 and 26 December. Our drivers work on 25 December.

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay runs from 29 December 2026 to 1 January 2027. Buy Street Party tickets for 31 December on the official site before you confirm dates with us. Central streets close to cars that night, so the driver agrees a drop-off and pick-up point outside them. Keep 1 January for rest or a short drive.

How to book

How do I book the tour?

By itinerary quote. Book as soon as your flight dates are fixed, and earlier for June to September, when the same driver must be held for every day.

1

Send dates, people and places

Dates, passengers, bags and the sights you will not miss. A draft plan comes back within one working day.

2

Approve the plan and the figure

Move a leg, add a night, change the car. The written quote lists each day’s start time and hours.

3

Pay the deposit, book your rooms

A deposit holds the dates and the driver; the balance is due before departure. Then reserve hotels in the towns on your plan.

Questions

Frequently asked questions about private tours of Scotland

Can you visit Scotland on a day trip from London?

Not comfortably. A same-day return to Edinburgh would mean some fifteen hours in the car and very little time in the city. Our shortest Scotland programme is therefore three days. For a single day out of London, the Cotswolds, Oxford or Stonehenge work far better.

How much does a private Scotland tour from London cost?

From £3,110 for three days in the Mercedes E-Class, for up to three passengers, or £3,350 in the V-Class, for up to seven. The price is per car, not per person, so it does not rise with each traveller. Four- and five-day prices are on the cards above, and you pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.

Do we pay separately for the driver’s hotel in Scotland?

No. The chauffeur’s room and meals are already in the price, so you never book or pay for them on the road. The driver stays close to your hotel and is ready at your door at the agreed start time each morning.

Who books our hotels, and where do we stay?

You book your own rooms, so you keep the choice of hotel and rate. We suggest towns that keep the next day under five hours of driving: usually Edinburgh, Inverness, Portree on Skye, Fort William or Glasgow. Send us the addresses once they are confirmed.

Can we add Skye or the Jacobite steam train?

Yes. Skye is built into the 5-day plan and can replace Glasgow on the 4-day one with an extra night. The Jacobite steam train runs from Fort William to Mallaig between spring and autumn, and seats sell out early. Book them yourself; your driver meets you at Mallaig with the luggage.

Can the tour end in Edinburgh or Glasgow instead of London?

Yes. Many guests finish at Edinburgh or Glasgow Airport and fly on. The prices above assume the trip ends back in London; a finish in Scotland adds the driver’s drive home, shown in your written quote. It suits plans with more time on Skye and the west coast.

Do you provide child seats?

Yes, for every age and at no charge. Tell us each child’s age when you book, and the right baby seat, child seat or booster is fitted before the first pickup and stays in the car for the whole trip.

Is it just our party in the car?

Yes. The car carries only your party, from one traveller to seven in the V-Class. There are no shared seats, no fixed departure dates and no meeting point; the trip starts on the day you choose, at your own hotel.

Will midges bother us in the Highlands?

They can. Highland midges are out from June to September, so pack insect repellent and a long-sleeved layer. Tell your driver if anyone reacts badly to bites, and lochside stops at dusk can be kept short.

Can a Scotland tour work with a wheelchair or limited mobility?

Yes, with some planning. A folding wheelchair or walker travels in the boot, and the driver sets you down at each entrance. Edinburgh Castle is the steepest stop, with about 350 metres of cobbles, but staff can arrange a mobility vehicle up to Crown Square on request.

Send us your dates and your must-see list.

The day-by-day plan and the written figure follow within one working day. Prefer to stay south of the border? See the multi-day England tour with a private driver.
