How does a Blenheim Palace day trip from London work?
Your chauffeur collects you at the hour you choose, usually 8:30am. The park opens at 9:00am and the state rooms at 10:30am, so an 8:30am start has you inside as they open. Palace, gardens, then an hour in Oxford

- 10:30 The state rooms open: the Great Hall, the Saloon, the Long Library and the Churchill Exhibition, about 1 hour 30 minutes.
- 12:00 Lunch at the Orangery or the Stables Café, 45 minutes, or on Woodstock’s high street of tea rooms and pubs (the Stables restaurant closes 8 to 12 November and the Orangery 9 to 12).
- 12:45 The Water Terraces, the Rose Garden and the lake walk to the Grand Bridge, 45 minutes.

Bicester Village, east of the palace, takes the Oxford hour: an hour of outlet shopping fits the eight hours, and the bags ride home in the boot.

Leave at 9:30am and give the park its due: the miniature train to the Walled Garden (£1 each way), the Cascade and the lake. Home by 5:30pm.

What will we see at Blenheim Palace?
A working ducal home and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. Winston Churchill was born here on 30 November 1874.
- The Great Hall — almost 20 metres high, its ceiling by Thornhill shows the 1st Duke presenting his Battle of Blenheim plans.
- The state rooms and the Saloon — the Blenheim Tapestries, woven in Brussels to mark the Duke’s victories of 1704.
- The Long Library — more than 55 metres long, where the tour of the house ends.
- The Churchill Exhibition — his letters, the maroon siren suit, speech recordings and a lifelike model dressed by his own tailors; included with the palace ticket.
- The Water Terraces and the Rose Garden — formal gardens by Achille Duchêne beside a lake and 2,000 acres of park laid out by Capability Brown.
- The Grand Bridge and Queen Pool — the view Lord Randolph Churchill called the finest in England, ten minutes on foot from the house.
Queen Anne gave the estate to John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, after the Battle of Blenheim in 1704. In the grounds, at the Temple of Diana, Winston Churchill proposed to Clementine Hozier in 1908.
Churchill’s grave at Bladon
Winston Churchill is buried in the churchyard of St Martin’s Church in Bladon, a village a few minutes by car south of the palace. Entry to the churchyard is free. Ask your driver to stop there on the way to Oxford or London; it is a short stop.
Which films were shot at Blenheim Palace?
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix used the bank of the Great Lake, where an ancient Cedar of Lebanon frames young Snape in Harry’s memory. Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story turned the house into Buckingham House, with the final ball on the Water Terraces, and Spectre filmed in the Great Court and the Great Hall. The palace’s Lights, Camera, Action map on its website marks each spot; most sit on the route from the Great Court to the lake.
A Churchill day: the War Rooms, then his birthplace
Start with an early entry at the Churchill War Rooms in Westminster, booked on the museum’s own website, and the car collects you at the exit for an afternoon at Blenheim. The day runs past eight hours, so add the extra hours when you book.

Oxford, Bicester Village or the Cotswolds: which stop to add to Blenheim?
Oxford for the colleges, Bicester for the shops; both sit under 25 minutes from the palace gates and either fits the afternoon.
- Oxford 8 miles and about 17 minutes south-east; the car drops you at the edge of the pedestrian centre for the Radcliffe Camera, the Bodleian and Christ Church. For a whole day among the colleges, the private Oxford day tour from London gives the city its own day.
- Bicester Village 14 miles and about 22 minutes east, designer outlets open until 8:00pm. A full shopping day with the palace as the morning stop is the Bicester Village shopping day.
- Both Oxford and Bicester together make a slightly longer day; add an extra hour when you book.
Burford and the Downton village
Blenheim sits on the eastern edge of the Cotswolds. Burford, a steep high street of honey-coloured houses above a riverside church, is about half an hour west of Woodstock, and an hour there is plenty. Bampton, the stone village that played Downton in the television series, lies about 20 minutes south of Burford; its church and lanes take about 45 minutes on foot. The castle itself is Highclere, in Hampshire, a separate day.
The palace with one village keeps close to the eight hours; the palace until about 1:00pm, Burford and then Bampton on the way home reaches London in the early evening, so book the extra hours with the trip. Bibury, Bourton-on-the-Water and Castle Combe sit much further west and deserve their own Cotswolds day trip.
When is Blenheim Palace open, and what should we know before we go?
Most of the year, unlike the private houses that open for a season. The park opens daily 9:00am to 6:00pm and the palace on most days; the state rooms keep their own hours by date.
- Opening hours: the state rooms open at 10:30am and close in the late afternoon, with last entry by date; storms can close the formal gardens for the day. Check the official opening times for your date, and we match the pickup.
- Inside the house: photographs are welcome without flash; tripods and selfie sticks are not. A lift reaches the state rooms for wheelchair users; hire wheelchairs are booked 24 hours ahead. Our cars have no ramp or lift: the passenger moves to the seat, and a folding wheelchair rides in the boot; tell us when you book. Free guided tours run at 12:00 and 3:00pm.
- On site: the palace cafés, shop and ticket desk are card only; picnics are welcome in the park; dogs on leads may walk the park but not the palace or the formal and walled gardens.
- Best months: the Rose Garden peaks in June and July; the park colours turn in October. Downton Abbey fans pair this day with the Highclere Castle day trip, 1 hour 30 minutes south.
Christmas at Blenheim 2026
From Friday 13 November to Sunday 3 January 2027 Christmas at Blenheim runs 10:00am to 8:00pm: Cinderella sets the scene in the state rooms, over a million lights line a trail through the gardens, an ice rink and an observation wheel open in the grounds, and the Christmas Market runs from 13 November to 20 December. Christmas entry is a separate, timed ticket booked online, so book it first and send us the time.
To see the trail lit, choose a late-morning or noon departure: the rooms in daylight, the trail after dark in late afternoon. Winter evenings are cold; spare coats wait in the car, and it is warm when you finish.

No. Tickets are sold on the palace’s own website, and the ticket covers the Churchill Exhibition and the gardens. Our part is the door-to-door drive, the wait in the car park and the journey home.

Just under two hours from central London in normal traffic, about 1 hour 40 minutes on a quiet morning. The palace is 62 miles from Mayfair, in Woodstock.
