Tripyana’s private 2-day Snowdonia tour from London is a chauffeur-driven Mercedes with one driver throughout. Snowdonia is about five hours each way, so the trip takes two days: pickup at your London hotel around 7:30am, Betws-y-Coed and Llanberis on day one, Caernarfon or Conwy Castle on day two. The fare is £1,840 for the car, up to three passengers, not per person, driver’s overnight included.

Why a private driver

Why book this Snowdonia tour from London with a private driver?

Mountains, lakes and a royal castle in two days, at your own pace. One chauffeur drives you there, stays nearby overnight and brings you home. Caernarfon and Conwy belong to one UNESCO World Heritage Site, the castles of King Edward I in Gwynedd, and the car carries only your party.

Door to door, both days

Pickup at any London hotel or airport terminal. Your Welsh hotel door on day two, then home the same evening.

Your driver waits at every stop

The car stays with you between stops. Walk the village, take the photo; the car is ready when you are.

Your pace, your stops

Linger longer or skip a stop, and your driver re-plans the route around you.

One price for the car

A fixed total for both days, not per person. Up to seven travellers share one V-Class.

Who you travel with: a licensed London operator, private hire licence PHOP950, and a registered UK company, TRIPYANA LTD, Company No. 16308293.

Watch both days before you book

A short film that follows both days in order: your hotel pickup, lunch in Betws-y-Coed, the Llanberis Pass below Yr Wyddfa, Llyn Padarn, your night in Wales, and Caernarfon Castle, with Conwy or Portmeirion as swaps.

Your two days

Can you visit Snowdonia in a day from London, or do you need two days?

You need two days. Snowdonia is about five hours each way by car, so a same-day return leaves only an hour or two in the mountains; for one day in Wales, Cardiff and the south are the better choice.

With one night in North Wales, the programme runs like this.

Day 2 · castle and home

Caernarfon Castle, then London

  1. About 09:00 Pickup at your hotel for about two hours at Caernarfon Castle, then lunch in town.
  2. About 12:30 Head for home. Prefer Conwy Castle or Portmeirion? Swap it in for the castle morning.
  3. About 17:45 Back at your London door.

Time at each stop: about three hours in Betws-y-Coed and at Swallow Falls with lunch, then the late afternoon on the pass and the lakeshore. Riding the Snowdon train on day two instead of the castle? A summit return takes 2 hours 30 minutes from Llanberis.

Where can we stop on the drive to Snowdonia?

Ask for the route past Llangollen and the drive north gains two sights. The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct carries a canal 38 metres above the River Dee, a short detour from the road and on the UNESCO list. Chirk Castle, a medieval border fortress, stands on the same stretch. Each stop trims time from Betws-y-Coed, so pick one when you book.

Walking and the train

How much walking is there, and can we ride the Snowdon train?

Very little, unless you want more. Most stops sit close to where your driver parks, so the tour suits grandparents, young children and anyone who prefers views to climbs.

Betws-y-Coed is level around the village and its river bridges. Paths at Swallow Falls turn slippery after rain, and the mountain pass is enjoyed mostly from the car, with photo stops where it is safe to pull in.

The Snowdon Mountain Railway

The train leaves from Llanberis, the lakeside village where day one ends. Tickets are not in our price: book them on the Snowdon Mountain Railway’s own website, where you choose a return to the summit or to Clogwyn station, about three-quarters of the way up. Trains sell out weeks ahead in the holidays.

Be at the station an hour before departure, as late arrivals cannot board. In spring and late autumn trains often turn at Clogwyn, and high winds can stop any train at Rocky Valley. Tell us your train time and your driver plans the day around it.

Want a real mountain walk? Climbing Yr Wyddfa needs a day of its own, as the questions below explain.

Seasons, winter and rain

When is the best time to visit Snowdonia, and what about winter and rain?

Eryri is open all year, but mountain weather turns quickly, so plan for rain on any day. October to April brings quieter roads and snow on the high tops.

Late May to September

Long light, green valleys and lakes at their brightest, with the best chance of clear peaks. Reserve summer hotels early.

November to February

Caernarfon and Conwy castles open 10:00 to 16:00, last entry 30 minutes before closing, and close on 24, 25 and 26 December and 1 January. The Snowdon train does not run in winter; its season runs from spring to early November.

What to pack

  • Waterproof jacket for showers that roll in fast.
  • Warm layer even in summer; passes feel cooler.
  • Shoes with grip for wet paths at Swallow Falls.
  • Small day bag the rest stays safe in the car.

In winter the two days centre on castles, villages and waterfalls. Daylight fades around four in December, so your driver keeps the pass and Swallow Falls for the brightest hours; if ice reaches the pass road, the valley route still shows the peaks. At Conwy, Cadw has closed one section of the town walls, between the Watch Tower and Wing Gate, and hopes to reopen it by Easter 2027.

What happens if it rains?

The car is never far away, so a shower means a short wait in the dry, not a lost day. Swallow Falls is fullest after rain, and Betws-y-Coed has cafés for a slow lunch indoors. If low cloud hides the peaks, your driver takes the mountain road when it lifts. If your train is called off, a lap of Llyn Padarn or a stop in Beddgelert, where two rivers meet below the peaks, fills the gap.

Your night in Wales

Where should we stay for the night in Snowdonia?

Pick your town by what you want from day two. You book the room; your driver collects you there at about 09:00 and stays close by.

Llanberis, on Llyn Padarn below Yr Wyddfa, suits first visits and anyone riding the mountain railway, and Caernarfon Castle is a short drive away the next morning.

Betws-y-Coed has the widest choice of hotels and guesthouses in the park, and evening walks by the river are easy.

Choosing Conwy Castle for day two? Stay in Conwy or seaside Llandudno instead. Tell us your hotel when you book and we plan both days around it.

Day two

Caernarfon, Conwy, Portmeirion or the coast: which suits day two?

Each fills a morning inside your driver’s hours, and a new stop replaces one on the plan rather than adding to it.

Caernarfon Castle suits lovers of towers and royal history; King Charles III was invested as Prince of Wales there in 1969. Its towers and wall walks are reached by steep, narrow spiral stairs, but a lift takes you to the upper levels of the King’s Gate. If someone uses a wheelchair, contact the castle ahead and tell us.

Conwy Castle stands above a small harbour town on the coast, on the way home, so the drive back starts sooner. Lunch by the quay. The way up from the visitor centre is a steep path with steps.

Portmeirion is an Italian-style village on the estuary, begun by architect Clough Williams-Ellis in 1925. Its gardens and painted houses suit families and photographers. Day tickets are sold online, so book yours before you travel.

Llandudno, the Great Orme and the slate quarries

Llandudno is a Victorian seaside town with a long pier below the Great Orme headland, where a tramway climbs almost to the summit, usually from late March to early November. It pairs well with a morning at Conwy Castle.

The slate country starts at Llanberis: across Llyn Padarn, the terraces of the old Dinorwig quarry climb the mountainside, part of the Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021. Day one ends on the lakeshore, so the view costs no extra time.

Zip World and other adventures

Zip World has two sites near this route. In Betws-y-Coed the Fforest Coaster and treetop courses suit adults and children and replace the riverside walk. At Penrhyn Quarry near Bethesda, a zip line billed as the fastest in the world flies above a quarry lake in place of the castle morning; the site opens all year except Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Book your sessions yourself, check each activity’s age, height and weight limits, and tell us the times; the driver waits while you ride.

Which part of Wales

North or South Wales, or both?

For a trip to Wales from London with one night away, the north gives the most for the time: Eryri has the mountains, the lakes and the castles of Edward I.

South Wales is closer. Cardiff, its castle and the waterfront fit into a single day, so if that is the Wales you have in mind, the Cardiff and South Wales day trip returns to London the same evening.

Both? Four or five days let the same driver and car reach all three national parks in Wales. A five-day loop runs west to Bannau Brycheiniog, the Brecon Beacons, on to the Pembrokeshire coast at St Davids and Tenby, north along Cardigan Bay into Eryri, then home. Each extra day is priced as in the section above, and the whole route comes back as one fixed total.

Walkers and photographers usually want the Llanberis side, history lovers Caernarfon, and families with small children Betws-y-Coed, where the paths are short and level. For the English fells instead, see our private-driver tour of the Lake District.

Questions

Questions before you book the Snowdonia tour

Where is Snowdonia, and is it called Eryri now?

Snowdonia is the national park in the north-west of Wales, around Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), the highest mountain in Wales at 1,085 metres. Since November 2022 the park authority has used the Welsh names, Eryri and Yr Wyddfa, in English too, keeping Snowdonia and Snowdon in brackets as a courtesy.

How far is Snowdonia from London by car?

About five hours each way from central London, with a break on the road.

Can you do Snowdonia as a day trip from London?

Not comfortably. Ten hours of driving in one day leaves almost no time among the mountains, which is why this tour includes one night in North Wales.

How much does a private 2-day Snowdonia tour cost?

£1,840 for the Mercedes E-Class, up to three passengers, or £2,000 for the V-Class, up to seven, for the whole car over both days, not per person. That is about $2,500 or $2,700 in US dollars at today’s rate; you are charged in pounds sterling. The S-Class and Range Rover are quoted on request.

Which car suits a family, and how much luggage fits?

Families of four or more usually take the V-Class: seven seats and room for seven suitcases. The E-Class takes three passengers with two suitcases. Child seats for every age are free.

Is the Snowdon Mountain Railway included, and do we need to book?

No, the tickets are separate. Book them yourself on the railway’s website before you travel; a summit return takes the place of the castle morning.

Can we climb Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) on this tour?

Not within two days. The Llanberis Path, the most gradual route to the summit, is 14.5 km there and back, takes about seven hours and is still graded hard by the national park. Add a third day and your driver drops you at the path in the morning and waits in Llanberis.

Is our hotel included in the price?

No. You book your own room, and we suggest the town that suits your day two. The driver’s accommodation is arranged and paid by us.

Can the tour start from Heathrow or last three days?

Yes to both. Your driver can meet you at Heathrow arrivals on day one and head north from there. A third day fits the mountain railway, Portmeirion and both castles without rushing.

What is the best month to visit Snowdonia?

May, June and September are usually the best months: long days, green valleys and calmer roads than in July and August.

Can I cancel, and how do I pay?

Cancel at least 24 hours before pickup and any card payment is refunded in full; inside 24 hours the fare is charged. Pay by card when you book, or pay the driver on the day by card or in cash, in pounds sterling.
