The journey

Heathrow to Gatwick is around 45 miles, running south on the M25 and M23 — 51 minutes at night and up to just over an hour at the 16:00 weekday peak door-to-door, by our own hour-by-hour data (Gatwick to Heathrow peaks at 79 at 07:00; all hours). Your chauffeur collects you at any Heathrow terminal, 2, 3, 4 or 5, and drops you at the correct Gatwick terminal, North or South, right at the departures door.

How much time do I need between the two flights?

Allow at least 4 to 5 hours between landing and your next departure. The arithmetic: 45 to 60 minutes to clear immigration and collect bags, the drive itself, then the check-in window your airline requires. Separate tickets are not protected if you miss the second flight, so a generous buffer is worth more than a fast car. Gatwick to Heathrow — the same run in reverse

Landing at Gatwick with an onward flight from Heathrow? Same service, same fixed price in either direction. A Gatwick to Heathrow transfer runs north on the M23 and M25, so an early-morning landing needs the widest buffer before your onward flight. Your chauffeur meets you in Gatwick arrivals, North or South, and drives you to the correct Heathrow terminal. Use the swap button on the booking form to reverse the route, or select Return (new ride) to book both legs in one go.

A long gap between flights? See London on the way

With most of a day between landing at Heathrow and flying out of Gatwick, the switch does not have to be one straight drive down the motorway. A private London landmarks tour by car can begin at your arrival terminal and end at your departure terminal, so the connection becomes a day in the city instead of hours in a lounge.

• Start in arrivals: your driver is waiting inside the hall, just as on the direct run.
• Keep your cases in the boot all day, so you step out at each stop with only what you need.
• End at departures: the last leg finishes at the North or South Terminal of your onward flight.
• Work backwards from your bag-drop cut-off: leave the drive to Gatwick and a margin for traffic after the final stop.

Leaving the airport means passing UK border control, so confirm your entry permission first (see the visa section below). Send both flight numbers when you enquire and we shape the day around them. Flying in reverse? The same plan works from Gatwick arrivals to Heathrow.

Self-transfer with checked bags, step by step

On separate tickets, your bags do not travel between the two airports for you. You collect them at Heathrow and hand them over again at Gatwick bag drop. Here is how the connection runs with a private car.

• Land at Heathrow Terminal 2, 3, 4 or 5 and follow the arrivals signs, not the flight connections signs.
• Clear UK passport control, then collect every checked bag from the reclaim belt.
• Walk through customs into the arrivals hall, where your chauffeur is holding a board with your name.
• Ride south on the motorway with your luggage in the boot, so there is nothing to carry on the way.
• Step out at the departures door of the North or South Terminal and go straight to bag drop.

Check your airline’s bag-drop cut-off before you book. It is usually earlier than gate closing, and it decides how much connection time you really have.

Is your onward flight the next morning? Many travellers prefer a night’s sleep near Gatwick to a late drive and an early alarm. Give us your hotel address and we drop you there instead of the terminal. You book the room yourself, and the morning ride to the terminal can be booked as a separate trip.

Do I need a UK visa or ETA to switch airports?

Yes, in most cases. Changing airports means passing UK border control, so you are formally entering the country. The exemption for airside transit does not cover this connection.

Visitors from Europe, the USA, Canada and Australia usually need an ETA, an electronic travel authorisation. Apply through the official GOV.UK service well before you fly. British and Irish passport holders do not need one.

If your nationality needs a visa, a Visitor in Transit visa usually covers passing through the border. It requires you to leave the UK within 48 hours. Rules depend on your passport, so check GOV.UK for your own nationality.

Keep your ETA or visa ready for passport control at Heathrow. Once you clear the border, the drive to your Gatwick terminal can begin. The same rules apply if you land at Gatwick and fly on from Heathrow.

Travelling between the two airports with children or reduced mobility?

Child seats are free on every booking, for any age from baby to booster. Tell us each child’s age when you book, and the right seats will be ready in the car.

Pushchairs and checked car seats ride in the boot with your cases. Count them as luggage when you pick the vehicle, so everything fits.

Our cars have no ramp or lift. The passenger needs to move from the wheelchair onto the car seat, with a helping hand if needed. A folding wheelchair travels in the boot.

Airport special assistance is booked with your airline, ideally at least 48 hours before you fly. Request it on both flights, so help is waiting at each airport.
