- 09:00Pickup at your London hotel. Oxford is about 56 miles north-west of London, about 1 hour 30 minutes by car on a weekday morning, by our hour-by-hour journey-time data.
- 10:30Set down at the edge of the pedestrian centre. Radcliffe Square first: the Radcliffe Camera, the Bodleian’s Old Schools Quadrangle and the Divinity School, then the Bridge of Sighs.
- 12:15Lunch on the High Street or in the Covered Market, while the Christ Church dining hall is closed for the students’ lunch.
- 14:00Christ Church: Tom Quad, the staircase and Great Hall from the Harry Potter films, and the cathedral. The hall reopens at two on most days, so this order suits most dates.
- 15:00Half an hour in the Ashmolean Museum, free, or a punt from Magdalen Bridge Boathouse, open until 30 November. Your driver collects you at an agreed corner.

What is there to see in Oxford in one day?
Oxford is a city of its own in Oxfordshire, not part of London. Its university has around 40 colleges.

- Bodleian Library — the university library since 1602; its Divinity School is the vaulted hall you may know from the films.
- Bridge of Sighs — Hertford College’s covered bridge over New College Lane, free to see from the street.

- Covered Market and the High Street — college gateways on one side and an indoor market for lunch on the other.
- Ashmolean Museum — Britain’s oldest public museum, free to enter.
Where was Harry Potter filmed in Oxford?
Two are on the plan above: the Christ Church staircase, filmed for the first film, with the Great Hall that inspired the Hogwarts dining hall, and the Bodleian’s Divinity School, used as the Hogwarts infirmary. New College’s cloister, from the fourth film, is a short detour. Christ Church’s hall also has the Alice in Wonderland window, and Tolkien and C.S. Lewis fans can add Magdalen College.

Do you need tickets for Christ Church and the Bodleian?

Is the Oxford day good for children and older travellers?

Is Oxford worth a day trip from London, and is one day enough?
Yes. The famous sights sit close together in the walkable centre, so the main colleges, the Bodleian and lunch fit the five hours or so you spend in Oxford. Museums, punting and a guided college tour can fill a second day with the same driver.
How far is Oxford from London by car?
About 56 miles, or about 1 hour 30 minutes from central London on a weekday morning, a little longer at the evening peak. From Heathrow it is about 47 miles and a little over an hour, so guests arriving by air often make Oxford their first day.
How much does a private Oxford day trip cost?

Which Harry Potter places can we see in Oxford?
The staircase and Great Hall at Christ Church, the Divinity School at the Bodleian, used as the Hogwarts infirmary, and the cloister at New College. The first two are on the standard plan and the cloister is a short detour; the Harry Potter Studio Tour near Watford is a separate trip.
Do we have to worry about parking or traffic rules in Oxford?
No. The centre is largely pedestrian, with very little parking and traffic filters on the main roads. Your driver plans the route and sets you down close to each stop; parking is in the fare.
Can we add Bicester Village, Blenheim or Cambridge?
Bicester Village is 20 minutes from Oxford and fits the afternoon with a shorter morning or an extra hour. Blenheim has its own day trip that ends in Oxford. Cambridge is in the other direction, so it is a separate Cambridge day trip.
Can we combine Oxford with Windsor and Stonehenge?
Yes. “Windsor, Stonehenge & Oxford” is a route in the booking form on the Stonehenge trip page, about eleven hours. It is a long day with less time in each place, so most guests choose Oxford on its own.
Is the driver also a tour guide?
No. Your chauffeur is a professional driver who knows the city and the set-down points, but is not a licensed guide. The Bodleian and the colleges run their own guided tours, and we fit them into the day.
