How the day runs

How does a Highclere Castle day trip from London work?

Your chauffeur collects you at the time you choose, usually between 8:30am and 9:30am. Highclere sells timed tickets on set dates, so we fix the pickup around your entry slot.

With Winchester

Cathedral city on the way home

Winchester Cathedral is 21 miles south of Highclere. A two-hour stop makes a nine-hour day: one extra hour on the booking.

With Newbury

Market town, 7 miles away

An hour in Newbury, about 15 minutes from the castle gates, fits the eight hours at no extra cost.

Quiet country road through green English fields, the last miles of the drive from London to Highclere Castle

Highclere sits 67 miles west of Mayfair; the last stretch leaves the motorway for country roads. The castle asks drivers to follow the brown signs rather than the sat nav; our chauffeurs know the visitor entrance.

From Heathrow Terminal 5 the castle is 49 miles, so guests landing in the morning can visit the same afternoon.

Downton Abbey

What will Downton Abbey fans recognise at Highclere Castle?

Almost everything above stairs. The first series was filmed at Highclere in 2010; the show ran six years and the films followed.

  • The grand staircase — Lady Mary’s descent on her wedding day; every tour walks down it.
  • The State Dining Room — where the Dowager Countess, played by Dame Maggie Smith, delivered her sharpest lines.
  • Jackdaws Castle — the folly where Lady Edith so often sat, with the classic view back to the house.
  • Lady Mary’s bench and the Secret Garden — in the gardens, which every admission ticket includes.
  • The bedrooms and the cellars — the stairs down lead to the old staff quarters and the Egyptian Exhibition.
  • Photographs — welcome on the lawns and grounds, not inside the castle.

The house has between 250 and 300 rooms; the tour covers the main state rooms, some bedrooms and the cellars. The parkland was laid out by Capability Brown in 1771. In November 1922 the 5th Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter opened Tutankhamun’s tomb; six rooms of the exhibition follow that discovery.

Questions

Frequently asked questions about the Highclere trip

Is Highclere Castle open every day?

No. Highclere is a private family home and opens on set dates. General admission runs in the Easter and summer holidays; guided tours fill selected days in the other seasons. Every ticket must be pre-booked. Check your date on the official site, then book the car; we match the pickup to your slot.

Do you sell Highclere Castle tickets?

No. Admission tickets are sold only on the castle’s own online store and must be bought before travelling. Children under 4 enter free and need no ticket. Our part is the door-to-door drive, the wait beside the visitor entrance and the journey back.

How long is the drive from London to Highclere Castle?

91 to 96 minutes from central London for departures from 8:00am to noon on a weekday, and 105 at the 4:00pm peak: the M4 west, then the A34 south, measured hour by hour in our journey-time study. Highclere is 67 miles from Mayfair and 49 miles from Heathrow Terminal 5. An airport pickup on arrival day therefore shortens the drive.

Can we add Bath or Stonehenge to the Highclere day?

Not in eight hours. Bath is 62 miles beyond Highclere and 115 miles back to London; the day would pass twelve hours. Book the Stonehenge and Bath day trip separately; a two-day plan with the same driver works well.

Which car suits a family of five?

A Mercedes V-Class at £480 for the day. It seats seven with seven suitcases, has three rows and space for a pushchair. Child seats are fitted on request at no charge. Couples usually take the E-Class; the S-Class and Range Rover are the executive options.

What can I bring into Highclere Castle?

Less than you might expect. Large bags and backpacks are not allowed in the grounds, and photography is not permitted inside the castle. Dogs are not admitted except assistance dogs; pushchairs may be left in the front hall. With a private car everything stays in the boot until you return.
