In autumn and winter, pick a trip with strong indoor sights and a drive of two hours or less. Daylight ends around 16:00 in December, so a long drive leaves little time on site.

- Avoid the 16:00 outbound peak. Eleven of the twelve destinations we measured have their slowest outbound hour at 16:00 or 17:00.
- Expect the return to take longest. From Bath, the drive back between 15:00 and 19:00 can take close to three hours.

Drive times from London by departure hour, measured for October 2026
We timed the drive from Park Lane in Mayfair to twelve of the most popular day trips at three departure times, 07:00, 08:30 and 10:00, on a weekday and a Saturday, using Google’s traffic model for Tuesday 20 and Saturday 24 October 2026. The return is timed leaving each place at 17:00 on the Tuesday.
The best hour to leave: on a Saturday, go at 07:00. It was the quickest start on every one of the twelve routes, up to 19 minutes faster than a 10:00 start, with the biggest gains to Canterbury, Stonehenge and Bibury. On a weekday, nine of the twelve drives change by 5 minutes or less between 07:00 and 10:00; leave at 07:00 for Canterbury and Leeds Castle, and after the rush, at 10:00, for Oxford.
Allow the most time for the way back: on the Tuesday, the 17:00 return took 5 to 19 minutes longer than the quickest morning start on every route except the Harry Potter studio.

Keep the drive to about 3 hours each way for a comfortable private day trip. Cardiff, at about 150 miles, is the furthest trip on this page.
Past that point, the car takes more of the day than the visit does. York is about 210 miles away, roughly 4 hours each way with clear roads.
