Yes, for safety, even though the law has an exception. A child may ride without a seat in a private hire car only on a rear seat. That applies only when no suitable seat is supplied. Safety bodies advise the right seat on every trip. Tripyana fits child seats free for every age, babies included.
This guide sets out the UK car seat rules as they apply to a chauffeur car in London. It covers the seat each age needs and the private hire exception. It also covers airport pickups and what to tell the company before the day.
What does UK law say about child car seats in a chauffeur car?
The general rule is simple. GOV.UK says children must use a child car seat until they are 12 years old or 135 centimetres tall. Whichever comes first applies. After that, they use the adult seat belt.
Private hire cars have a narrow exception. If the driver does not supply the right seat, children can travel without one, but only on a rear seat. Children aged 3 or over then wear an adult belt, and younger children travel without one.
The exception exists so a family is never stranded at the kerb. It is a legal minimum rather than safety advice, and it never covers the front seat.
The driver carries the legal duty. Under the seat belt law on GOV.UK, the driver makes sure each child under 14 is correctly restrained. The fine is up to £500.

Is it safe for a child to ride without a car seat?
No. The exception makes it legal, not safe. RoSPA, the road safety charity, cites a Swedish study. Rearward-facing child seats reduced the likelihood of injury by 90% compared with no restraint.
An adult belt is built for an adult body, and RoSPA notes that seat belts do not fit children properly. A booster seat lifts the child so the belt sits where it should. Without it, the lap belt can ride up over the stomach.
London driving adds its own strain. Stop-start traffic, sharp braking at junctions and motorway speeds on the way to an airport all test the restraint. A seat that fits the child turns those into routine journeys.
Which car seat does a child need at each age?
Choose the seat by the child’s height or weight, not by age alone. GOV.UK describes two approved systems. Height-based i-Size seats follow R129, and older weight-based seats follow ECE R44. Both are legal in the UK when they carry the approval label.
| Stage | Typical size | Seat type | Rule or advice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baby | Up to 13 kg | Rear-facing baby seat | i-Size seats stay rear-facing until at least 15 months (GOV.UK) |
| Toddler | 9 to 18 kg | Forward-facing seat with harness, or extended rear-facing | RoSPA: extended rear-facing seats typically run to around four years of age |
| Young child | 15 to 25 kg | High-backed booster seat | Raises the child so the adult belt fits; belts alone do not fit children (RoSPA) |
| Older child | 22 to 36 kg | Booster approved as group 3 | New booster cushions are made as group 3 only (GOV.UK) |
| 12 years or 135 cm | Adult size | Adult seat belt | A child car seat is no longer required (GOV.UK) |
Two details catch families out. A rear-facing baby seat must never face an active front airbag. And a backless booster cushion does not suit a small child. New cushions are only approved for the heaviest group.

Do chauffeur companies in London provide child seats?
Ask before you book. A company can only fit the seats it carries. Under the private hire exception, a car can legally arrive without one. Put the request in writing so it is part of the booking.
At Tripyana, child seats are free and fitted before pickup. Every age is covered, from newborns to booster-age children, with up to two seats in each car. Add each child’s age and rough weight to the booking so the chauffeur brings the right type.
Parents should still check the fit once the child is seated, and tell the chauffeur if a strap needs adjusting.
Which chauffeur car works best for a family with car seats?
The Mercedes V-Class is the easiest car for child seats. It takes up to 7 passengers and 7 cases. Its wide sliding doors let a parent stand upright while buckling a child in. Our Mercedes V-Class with a chauffeur is the car most families choose.
A saloon such as the Mercedes E-Class takes up to 3 passengers and 2 cases. For a small family with light luggage it is the lower-cost choice.

Pushchairs and spare seats take boot space. Count them as luggage when you choose the car. A family of 4 with 4 large cases and a pushchair needs the V-Class. A saloon boot takes 2 cases.
How do car seats work on a Heathrow airport pickup?
Arrival is when seats matter most, after a long flight with tired children. Book the Heathrow airport transfer to your hotel with the flight number and each child’s age. The seats are then fitted before the chauffeur meets you inside arrivals.
The chauffeur tracks the flight, and the first 60 minutes after landing are free. Passport queues and baggage reclaim with children rarely run to plan, so the wait is already built in.
If you fly with your own seat, say so when booking. The chauffeur then leaves that space clear instead of fitting a second seat.

What should parents tell the chauffeur company before the day?
Five details make the booking exact:
- Each child’s age, plus height or weight if they are close to changing seat.
- How many seats you need, including any seat you bring yourself.
- Pushchairs, travel cots and large cases, so the car has room for them.
- The flight number for an airport pickup, so the timing follows your landing.
- Any medical exemption, since GOV.UK allows a doctor’s certificate when a condition prevents a child using a seat.
Add these to the notes on the online booking form. The fare is fixed before you pay, and the seats add nothing to it. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup.
Can a child sit in the front seat of a chauffeur car?
It is legal with the right seat, but the rear is safer. GOV.UK requires any front airbag to be switched off before a rear-facing baby seat goes in the front. RoSPA says it is safer for children to travel in the rear seats than the front.
In a chauffeur car the question rarely arises. Children ride in the rear, and the front passenger seat stays free for an adult.

Does the short-journey exception apply to a booked chauffeur?
Rarely. GOV.UK lets a child aged 3 or over use an adult belt on some trips. The trip must be unexpected, necessary and short. The rule is meant for emergencies, not planned travel.
A chauffeur booking is planned by definition. There is time to arrange the right seat, so the exception should never be the plan for a family trip.

Frequently asked questions about car seats in a chauffeur car
Can a baby travel without a car seat in a London chauffeur car?
Legally yes, but only on a rear seat when the car has no suitable seat, according to GOV.UK. It is not the safe choice. RoSPA cites a 90% lower likelihood of injury in a rearward-facing seat than with no restraint. Tripyana fits baby seats free when you give the age at booking.
At what age can a child use an adult seat belt in the UK?
At 12 years old or 135 centimetres tall, whichever comes first. Until then, GOV.UK requires a child car seat suited to the child’s height or weight. Private hire cars have a narrow exception. Measure the child rather than relying on age alone, because height decides whether the adult belt fits safely.
Are child seats free with Tripyana?
Yes. Child seats are free for every age, babies included, with up to two seats in each car. Add each child’s age and approximate weight when you book. The chauffeur then arrives with the right seats already fitted. The fixed fare stays the same whether you need one seat, two or none.
Can I bring my own child car seat?
Yes. Mention it in the booking notes and the chauffeur leaves the space clear for your seat. Check that it carries the E-in-a-circle approval label. GOV.UK lists R129 and ECE R44 as the standards approved for UK use. Tell us the seat type so the chauffeur knows how it fits.
Who is responsible if a child is not in the right seat?
The driver. GOV.UK makes the driver responsible for any child under 14 being in the correct seat or belt. The fine is up to £500. Give the chauffeur company each child’s age in advance. The right seats are then in the car before anyone gets in.
