- Taksim and Beyoğlu: about 40 km, mostly on the Northern Marmara and TEM motorways.
- Beşiktaş and the Bosphorus hotels: about 40 km, with the last stretch along the shore road.
- Sultanahmet and the old city: about 45 km, leaving the motorway for the coastal road.
Distance matters less than the time of day. Istanbul traffic peaks between 07:30 and 10:00 and again from 17:00 to 20:00. A 45-minute run to Taksim can stretch past 90 minutes in the evening rush. How do official taxis work at Istanbul Airport?
Official taxis wait on a marked rank outside the arrivals exits, and all run on a meter. Istanbul uses three tiers of licensed taxi, identified by colour: standard yellow, larger turquoise, and premium black. Each tier charges a different metered rate, and the bigger cars cost more per kilometre.
Three things catch visitors out. First, motorway tolls are added to the meter, and the driver may ask for them in cash. Second, queues at the rank after a bank of evening arrivals can run to 30 minutes or more. Third, drivers rarely speak English, so have the hotel name and address written in Turkish on your phone.
Ignore anyone inside the terminal offering a “taxi” or “transfer” on the spot. Licensed taxis do not solicit in the hall. Walk to the official rank or to your own chauffeur, and nowhere else.
Is the Havaist bus a good option for Taksim or Sultanahmet hotels?
Yes for a solo traveller with one bag, and no for a family with four suitcases. Havaist is the airport’s own coach network, leaving from the bus level below arrivals. Routes serve Taksim, Beşiktaş, Kadıköy, Yenikapı near the old city, and several other districts. Tickets are paid with an Istanbulkart or by card on board.
Journey time to Taksim runs 60 to 90 minutes, because the coach uses the same roads as everyone else. The stop is not your hotel. From Taksim Square, most Beyoğlu hotels are a 5 to 15 minute walk downhill on cobbles. From the Yenikapı or Aksaray stops, Sultanahmet hotels still need a short taxi or tram ride.
Check the timetable for your landing hour. Some routes thin out overnight. A 45-minute wait at 02:00 with tired children is a poor start to a holiday.
Can you take the metro from Istanbul Airport?
Yes. The M11 line opened in 2023 and links the airport with Gayrettepe in about 35 minutes. The station is under the terminal, signposted from arrivals. At Gayrettepe you change to the M2 line, which reaches Taksim in another 15 to 25 minutes.
For Sultanahmet, the metro is a three-leg journey: M11 to Gayrettepe, M2 to Vezneciler, then the T1 tram. Allow 90 minutes door to door. It is the cheapest and most predictable route. It makes sense for one person with a backpack who lands in daylight.
It makes less sense with luggage. Every change involves escalators, gaps and crowded platforms. The metro also stops running around midnight and restarts around 06:00, so late arrivals cannot use it at all.
What if you land at Sabiha Gökçen instead?
Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is Istanbul’s second airport, on the Asian side near Pendik. Many low-cost and late-night flights use it. Google Maps puts Taksim and Sultanahmet at about 45 km by road. The route crosses the Bosphorus on a bridge or through the Eurasia Tunnel.
That crossing is the problem. Bridge traffic is heavy for most of the day. A Sabiha Airport transfer to your hotel takes 55 to 90 minutes to the European side. Kadıköy and Üsküdar hotels on the Asian side are much quicker.
Public options are thinner at Sabiha. Havaist coaches run to Taksim and Kadıköy, and the M4 metro reaches the airport from Kadıköy. There is no rail link across to Taksim or the old city. For an arrival after 23:00 with bags, a driver waiting at the terminal is the practical choice. The Vito starts from $60 one way.
What should you sort out on arrival — SIM, cash and luggage?
Five things are easier to handle in the terminal than at the hotel.
- SIM card or eSIM. The three Turkish networks have counters in arrivals. Tourist packages are registered to your passport and last for the trip. An eSIM bought before departure avoids the queue entirely.
- Currency. Turkey uses the lira, and prices for street food, trams and small shops are quoted in lira. ATMs in the arrivals hall give lira on a foreign card. Exchange counters in the terminal give a worse rate than bank ATMs.
- Luggage. Trolleys are free in the baggage hall. Count bags against your fleet choice: a Vito holds 6 cases, a Sprinter 12, an E-Class 2.
- Meeting point. For a pre-booked driver, walk through customs into the public arrivals hall and look for your name on a board. Do not leave the building to look for the car; the chauffeur comes to you.

What is different about night arrivals and families?
Night arrivals remove two options. The metro is closed between roughly midnight and 06:00, and Havaist runs a reduced overnight timetable. That leaves the taxi rank and a pre-booked car. The rank at 01:00 is quiet or chaotic, depending on which long-haul flights have just landed.
Roads are empty at night, so the drive to Taksim can drop to 40 minutes. Beyoğlu and Sultanahmet hotels sit on narrow one-way lanes. A driver who knows the area saves ten minutes of circling at the end.
Families should think about three details. Child seats are available on request when you book a private car; taxis do not carry them. A Vito seats 7, so two families fit one car. And a driver who takes the bags means nobody manages a pushchair on a metro escalator.
