How far is the Lake District from London, and is a day trip possible?
About 270 miles (435 km) from central London to Windermere. The route is the M1, then the M6 to junction 36 for Kendal. Allow 4.5 to 5 hours each way, so a same-day return means roughly 10 hours on the road.
A day trip is possible, but long. Hence three shapes; most families pick the second.

Where can we stop on the way?
Anywhere along the M6 corridor, at no extra charge inside the agreed hours. Manchester, 200 miles out and 1.5 hours short of Windermere, is the natural lunch stop (see our London to Manchester guide). Liverpool, Chester and Lancaster sit within 30 minutes of the motorway.

What should you know before you go?
Pack for rain in any month. Met Office sites in the Lake District record more than 4 metres of rain a year; the UK average is 1,154 mm. A waterproof layer and walking shoes belong in the car, even in July.

Is the Lake District too far for a day trip from London?
It is far, not impossible. Windermere is 270 miles away, so a day trip means about 10 hours of driving and 5 at the lakes. A 06:30 departure works for Windermere, Ambleside and Grasmere. With children or luggage, two days is easier.
Where does the driver pick us up and drop us off?
At any London hotel, home or Heathrow terminal, at the time you choose. The car takes you straight to the lake shore at Windermere or Bowness and stays with you between the villages. At the end of the day, or the next morning, it returns you to your own door.
Can we stay overnight and come back the next day?

Can the driver wait while we walk or take a lake cruise?
