When is the best time to visit Snowdonia, and what should you pack?
Late May to September brings the longest days and the best chance of clear peaks. Eryri is open all year, but mountain weather turns quickly, so plan for rain on any day.
May to September
Long light, green valleys and lakes at their brightest. The Snowdon Mountain Railway is seasonal and weather-dependent, booked separately. Reserve summer hotels early.
October to April

Each one fills a morning and keeps the day inside your driver's hours. Pick the stop that fits your party.
Caernarfon Castle suits lovers of towers and royal history. King Charles III was invested as Prince of Wales there in 1969.
Conwy Castle stands above a small harbour town on the coast road east. Lunch by the quay, and the drive home starts sooner.
Portmeirion is an Italian-style village on the estuary, begun by architect Clough Williams-Ellis in 1925. 2026 is its centenary year. Its gardens and painted houses suit families and photographers. Day tickets are sold online, so book yours before you travel.
Where can we stop on the drive to Snowdonia?
Anywhere that fits the day’s nine hours. Ask for the A5 route past Llangollen and the drive north gains two sights.
Near Llangollen, the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct carries a canal 38 metres above the River Dee. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a short detour off the A5.
Chirk Castle, a medieval border fortress, stands on the same stretch. Each stop trims time from Betws-y-Coed, so pick one when you book.
On day two, Conwy lies on the A55 coast road east. Swapping Caernarfon for Conwy Castle shortens the drive home.
How much walking does the Snowdonia tour involve?
Very little, unless you want more. Every stop sits close to where your driver parks, so the tour suits grandparents, young children and anyone who prefers views to climbs.
Betws-y-Coed is level around the village and its river bridges. Paths at Swallow Falls turn slippery after rain, and the mountain pass is enjoyed mostly from the car, with photo stops where it is safe to pull in.
Caernarfon Castle can be enjoyed at ground level, though its towers and wall walks are reached by steep, narrow spiral stairs. If someone in your party may need help on the stairs or uses a wheelchair, contact the castle ahead to reserve a timeslot, and tell us so we plan the visit first.

What does the Snowdonia tour look like from November to March?
The same two days, built around castles, villages and waterfalls rather than the summit. The mountain railway runs its last trains around the start of November and does not reopen until spring.
Even in season the summit is not certain. In spring and late autumn trains often turn at Clogwyn station, about three-quarters of the way up, and high winds can stop any train at Rocky Valley. If reaching the top matters, travel between May and September and book your train first, then your car.
In winter Caernarfon Castle opens 10am to 4pm, last entry 30 minutes before closing, and it shuts on 24, 25 and 26 December and 1 January. Daylight fades around four in December, so your driver keeps the Llanberis Pass and Swallow Falls for the brightest hours and moves the castle to the morning of day two.
Snow on the high tops is the winter reward. If ice reaches the pass road, your driver takes the valley route instead and you still see the peaks from the car.
What happens if it rains on the Snowdonia tour?
Rain is part of Eryri, and the plan is built to absorb it. The car is never far away, so a heavy shower means a short wait in the dry rather than a lost day.
Swallow Falls is at its fullest after a night of rain, and Betws-y-Coed has cafés and outdoor shops for a slow lunch indoors. Low cloud can hide the peaks, so your driver watches the sky and takes the mountain road when it lifts: the afternoon of day one, or first thing the next morning on the way to the castle.
Castles keep their drama in any weather. Much of a castle morning is spent inside towers, passages and exhibitions, and a grey sky over the walls makes some of the best photographs of the trip. If day two looks wet, an early castle visit and a prompt start for London keep the journey in daylight.
The summit is the one stop rain can cancel, as the mountain railway runs only when conditions allow. Tell us your train time; if it is called off, your driver fills the gap with a slow lap of Llyn Padarn or a stop in Beddgelert, so the day still has a plan.
Where should we stay for the night in Snowdonia?
Pick your town by what you want from day two. You book the room; your driver collects you there at about 09:00 and stays close by.
Llanberis sits on Llyn Padarn below Yr Wyddfa. It suits first visits and anyone riding the mountain railway, which starts in the village. Caernarfon Castle is a short drive away the next morning.
Betws-y-Coed has the widest choice of hotels and guesthouses in the park. You arrive there for lunch on day one, so evening walks by the river are easy.
Choosing Conwy Castle for day two? Stay in Conwy or seaside Llandudno instead. Both sit on the coast road east, so the drive home starts sooner. Tell us your hotel when you book and we plan both days around it.
Can we add Llandudno, the Great Orme or the slate quarries?
Yes, as a swap rather than an extra. Each day stays inside your driver’s nine hours, so a new stop takes the place of one on the plan.
Llandudno is a Victorian seaside town on the coast road east, with a long pier and the Great Orme headland rising above it. The Great Orme Tramway climbs almost to the summit. It usually runs from late March to early November, so check the dates before you travel.
The coast works best on day two. Spend the morning at Conwy Castle, take the tram up the Orme, then head home along the A55. If you stay the night in Llandudno, you can start on the pier before breakfast.
The slate country starts at Llanberis. Across Llyn Padarn, the stepped terraces of the old Dinorwig quarry climb the mountainside. They belong to the Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021. Day one already ends on the lakeshore, so you get the view at no extra time.

North or South Wales: which suits a two-day trip from London?
For a trip to Wales from London with one night away, the north gives the most for the time. Eryri has the mountains, the lakes and the castles of Edward I, and it sits far enough from London that a same-day return would leave little time there. One night in Llanberis or Betws-y-Coed turns the journey into a full mountain afternoon and an unhurried castle morning.
South Wales is closer. Cardiff, its castle and the waterfront fit into a single day, so they rarely need a hotel night. If that is the Wales you have in mind, the Cardiff day trip linked above is the simpler choice and leaves the second day free in London.

Can Wales tours from London take in the south and west as well?

Yes, in place of one planned stop. Zip World runs three adventure sites in the region, and two of them sit close to this route. Book your sessions yourself, tell us the times, and the driver builds the day around them and waits while you ride.
Zip World Betws-y-Coed is in the village where day one stops for lunch. Its Fforest Coaster runs through the trees, and treetop courses suit adults and children alike. A session there replaces the riverside walk or Swallow Falls.
Zip World Penrhyn Quarry is at Bethesda, on the A5 below the Ogwen valley. Its zip line, billed as the fastest in the world, flies above a blue quarry lake. It fits day two in place of the castle morning. The site opens all year except Christmas Day and Boxing Day, though off-peak opening days vary.
Each activity sets its own age, height and weight limits, and some ask for arms and legs to be covered, so check before you book, especially with children. Bring a change of clothes; your cases stay in the locked boot while you fly.

Can we ride the Snowdon Mountain Railway on this tour?
Yes, if you book the tickets yourself on the railway’s website. A summit return takes about 2 hours 30 minutes from Llanberis. Tell us the departure time and we plan the day around it. Expect one to three extra hours that day.
What if a day runs longer than planned?
Your driver simply waits. Each day covers up to nine hours, waiting included. Hours past nine are added at the extra-time rate for your car shown under the prices, so there is no surprise charge. Tell us your plans in advance and we build them into the quote.
Can the tour start from Heathrow or last three days?
Yes to both. Your driver can meet you at Heathrow arrivals on day one. A third day adds one more day at the same day rate and another driver’s night. That fits the railway, Portmeirion and both castles without rushing.
Can I cancel, and how do I pay?
Yes. Cancel at least 24 hours before pickup and any card payment is refunded in full; inside 24 hours the fare is charged. Pay by card in the booking form when you book, or choose cash and settle with the driver in pounds sterling on the day.

What is the best month to visit Snowdonia?
May, June and September are usually the best months for Snowdonia. Days are long, valleys are green and the roads are calmer than in July and August. Mountain weather still changes quickly, so bring a waterproof layer in any month.
Can we climb Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) on this tour?
Not within two days. The Llanberis Path, the most gradual route to the summit, is 14.5 km there and back, takes about seven hours and is still graded hard by the national park. It needs a day to itself. Add a third day and your driver drops you at the path in the morning and waits in Llanberis. Prefer views without the climb? Ask about the mountain railway.
