When is the best time for the cliffs, and what should we know?
April to October for the clifftop walk; the Royal Pavilion and the pier work in any month.
- Pavilion tickets: book a timed slot online for a weekend visit; weekdays rarely need it.
- Summer weekends: the seafront fills after 11:00; an early pickup puts you in the Pavilion before the crowds.
- Winter: daylight ends before 16:30 from November to January, and the Seven Sisters visitor centre keeps winter hours of 10am to 4pm, so the cliffs come first and the pier last.

How long is the Seven Sisters walk, and where should we stop?
As long as you like. Because the car is not tied to one car park, the driver drops you at the start of a walk and waits at its end, so you never walk back the same way. Four places matter:
- Seaford Head: the classic postcard view, with the coastguard cottages in front and all seven cliffs lined up behind them, five minutes on foot from the car.
- Cuckmere Haven: the river winds across the valley to a shingle beach, about 20 minutes each way on a flat path from the Exceat visitor centre. The best spot for a slow walk and a picnic.
- Birling Gap: a staircase of 50 steps down to the beach beneath the chalk, with the old Belle Tout lighthouse on the clifftop above. The steps close at short notice after rockfalls.
- Beachy Head: not one of the seven, but the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain, about ten minutes east of Birling Gap, with the lookout close to the car.
Then pick the walk that suits your group:
- Easy, under an hour: Seaford Head, the Birling Gap clifftop and Beachy Head, each a few minutes from where the car stops.
- Moderate, about an hour: the National Trust circuit from Birling Gap up to Belle Tout, about two miles on grass with one steady climb.
- The seven cliffs, two to three hours: Birling Gap to Exceat, about 4.4 miles over every rise and dip of the chalk, with the driver parked at the far end.
- The whole coast path, most of the day: Seaford to Eastbourne, about 13 miles; you are dropped in Seaford after breakfast and collected in Eastbourne, and Brighton waits for another trip.
There are no kiosks on the clifftop path; toilets and cafés are at the Exceat visitor centre, Birling Gap and the Beachy Head car park. Write the walk you want in the booking notes and the pickup is timed to the daylight.
The cliffs are beautiful and genuinely dangerous. A few simple habits keep the day relaxed:
- Keep well back from the edge: the park asks visitors to stay at least 5 metres from the edge; there are no fences, the chalk overhangs and pieces break away without warning.
- On the beach below: stay clear of the cliff foot, where rockfalls land, and leave before the incoming tide reaches the steps. At Cuckmere Haven, follow the coast path round the river mouth instead of wading across, as the current runs strong at high tide.
- Wear grippy shoes: the grass turns slippery after rain, and the clifftop climbs steeply in places.
- Pack a windproof layer: it is often several degrees cooler on top than on the Brighton seafront.
If the weather turns, the plan simply flips: Brighton’s indoor sights take the wet hours, and the cliffs wait for the brighter spell.
Is the day suitable for children, older travellers and wheelchair users?
Yes, with a little planning, and the car does most of the work. Your driver sets you down at each entrance and waits nearby. Child seats for any age are fitted free on request, and the V-Class takes a folded pushchair with the bags.
At the Royal Pavilion, the ground floor is open to wheelchair users, and wheelchairs can be borrowed on request. The upper floor is reached by stairs only.
