The short answer

How often are Heathrow arrivals delayed?

76.8% of scheduled flights arriving at Heathrow reached the gate early or no more than 15 minutes late between August 2025 and July 2026, according to Civil Aviation Authority data on 235,192 arrivals. 4.5% were over an hour late, and 19.6% arrived over 15 minutes early.

This study answers the questions we hear from guests before they fly: how often a Heathrow arrival is late, which routes and airlines are worst, which month to expect trouble, and how often a flight turns up early. The CAA times an arrival at the gate (on-block), not at touchdown, so the figures describe when you can start walking to passport control.

London airports

Is Heathrow more punctual than Gatwick, Stansted and Luton?

Yes. Heathrow had the best arrival punctuality of the four big London airports: 76.8% on time against 72.4% at Gatwick, 71.4% at Stansted and 71.2% at Luton. Only London City, with short business routes, did better at 78.9%.

Heathrow76.8%4.5%
Gatwick72.4%6.9%

  • Long delays are rarer at Heathrow. 4.5% of Heathrow arrivals were more than 60 minutes late, against 6.9% at Gatwick and 7.4% at Stansted, where short-haul holiday flights run tight turnarounds all day.
  • Heathrow cancels more. 1.4% of planned Heathrow arrivals were cancelled, against 1.0% at Gatwick and 0.5% at Stansted. A full two-runway airport has little room to recover a slot once weather or air traffic control cuts capacity.
  • Early arrivals are a Heathrow habit. 19.6% of Heathrow flights reached the gate early by more than a quarter of an hour, the highest of the five airports, because long-haul schedules carry padding that a tailwind over the Atlantic uses up.
By month

Which month has the most Heathrow delays?

September 2025 was the worst month for Heathrow arrivals in the period, with 68.4% on time, and March 2026 the best at 82.9%. The weak spells were late summer, June and midwinter, when European airspace is busiest or the weather turns.

The pattern matters when you plan the first evening of a trip. A dinner booking two hours after a June landing is safe on most days; in a bad week the same flight can arrive with the airport already running an hour behind. Heathrow’s own live arrivals board shows today’s flights; this table shows how the month usually goes.

Which flights into Heathrow are most often late?

Flights from Dallas/Fort Worth were the least punctual big route into Heathrow: 60.9% on time and 13.8%, about 1 in 7, over 60 minutes behind schedule. Chicago O’Hare, Delhi, Charlotte and New York Newark follow. All five are long-haul routes where one late inbound aircraft delays the return flight.

At the other end, the most reliable routes with over 1,000 arrivals were Johannesburg (89.0%), Cork (87.3%), Glasgow (85.7%), Keflavik (85.3%) and Newcastle (85.1%). Short flights from Scandinavia and the UK regions dominate the list, with Johannesburg and Singapore the long-haul exceptions.

From the United States

How often do flights from the US arrive early or late at Heathrow?

Flights from the United States are the most unpredictable arrivals at Heathrow: 29.4% of the 40,672 US arrivals reached the gate over 15 minutes early, and 6.4% were more than an hour late. Miami was early 43.8% of the time; Dallas/Fort Worth was over an hour late 13.8% of the time.

  • Overnight eastbound flights ride the jet stream. A strong tailwind shortens flights from the US East Coast, so Boston (35.4% early) and New York JFK (33.7%) often land before the airport is ready. Early arrivals can wait for a free stand, which is why a flight marked “landed” may take 20 minutes more to reach the gate.
  • Hub connections carry delay across the Atlantic. Dallas, Chicago and Charlotte are airline hubs where the London flight waits for connecting passengers from across the US. American Airlines, the main carrier on those routes, averaged 29 minutes of arrival delay at Heathrow.
  • Plan the pickup for the flight, not the timetable. If you have a car booked, the driver should watch the live flight, not the scheduled time: a Boston flight is as likely to arrive early as a Dallas flight is to arrive an hour late.
By airline

Which airlines are most punctual at Heathrow?

Vueling, SAS and Virgin Atlantic had the best on-time records of the 25 largest airlines at Heathrow. Virgin Atlantic stood out on long-haul, with 82.6% on time and 40.4% arriving early. Air India was the least punctual, with 46.2% on time and 14.6% more than 60 minutes late.

British Airways operated 118,738 of the 235,192 scheduled arrivals, half of all Heathrow traffic, and landed 78.8% on time, slightly better than the airport average. Because one airline carries so much of the traffic, a bad day for British Airways operations is a bad day for Heathrow as a whole.

Your pickup

What a late or early landing means for your pickup

A late or early flight changes the pickup, not the journey. The gate time in this study is only the first step: after it comes the walk to passport control, the immigration queue and the baggage belt, and on a busy long-haul morning that can take longer than the flight was late.

  • Track the flight, not the timetable. With 1 in 5 flights more than 15 minutes early and 1 in 22 delayed by more than an hour, a pickup fixed to the scheduled time is wrong about one flight in four. A driver who follows the live flight arrives when you do.
  • Free waiting should start at landing. Tripyana chauffeurs track every flight and include 60 minutes of free waiting after the actual landing time, so a delayed Dallas or Delhi flight costs nothing extra. The Heathrow airport transfer page lists the fixed fares.
  • The queue after the gate is the slow part. A busy morning at the border can add as much wait as a late flight. Our guide to Heathrow fast track and arrivals assistance explains the options, and meet and assist at London airports covers an escort from the aircraft door.
  • The road adds its own variation. The drive from Heathrow to Park Lane took 35 minutes at 01:00 and 68 minutes at 08:00 on a September weekday; our airport journey times by hour study has the figure for every hour of the day.
