Plan your visit

What should you know before visiting Mont Saint-Michel?

A Mont Saint-Michel tour from Paris is the longest day we offer, so a few details make it easier.

  • Expect about 350 steps

The climb to the abbey has no lift. Wear flat shoes and take your time on the Grande Rue.

  • Note the abbey hours

From May to August the abbey opens 9:00 to 19:00, and from September to April 9:30 to 18:00. Last entry is one hour before closing.

  • Check the tides

On a few days a year, very high tides restrict access for safety. Look at the tide calendar when you choose your date.

  • Leave big bags in the car

Suitcases and large backpacks are not allowed on the Mont. Your chauffeur keeps them safe in the car.

Avoid the crowds

When is Mont Saint-Michel at its quietest?

The local tourist office says the Mont is very busy in the daytime, and the village is calmer before 10:00 or after 17:00. With your own car, you can plan the visit around those hours.

  • Try a late-day plan

Leave Paris around 10:00 and reach the Mont in mid-afternoon. See the abbey first, then stroll the Grande Rue as the day visitors leave. You are back at your hotel around 22:00, inside the twelve hours.

  • Stay for sunset in winter

The tourist office suggests the best visit begins late in the afternoon and lasts until sunset. From November to January the sun sets before 18:00, so sunset fits easily into the day.

  • Choose a quieter month

Winter brings far fewer visitors, January above all. Visit the abbey before the village, as it closes earlier in the low season.

  • Tell us your timing

Add your preferred departure time to your request. The fixed price stays the same whether you start early or late.

Questions

Questions about a Mont Saint-Michel day trip from Paris

Can you visit Mont Saint-Michel in a day from Paris?

Yes, with a private car. The drive is about four hours each way, and a twelve-hour day leaves around four hours for the abbey, the village and the ramparts.

How much is a Mont Saint-Michel private tour from Paris?

The twelve-hour day costs €1,250 in a Mercedes E-Class for up to three guests. A V-Class for up to seven costs €1,450. The price is for the whole car.

Can the car drive onto the Mont?

No. Private cars park on the mainland, about 2.5 km away. A free shuttle bus crosses the causeway in around 12 minutes, and your chauffeur waits at the car park.

Are abbey tickets included?

No. You buy abbey tickets yourself, ideally online before the day. The village streets and the ramparts are free to explore, so the abbey is the only ticket you need.

When is the abbey closed?

The abbey closes on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December. It opens on every other day of the year, with shorter hours from September to April.

Can we add Saint-Malo or the D-Day beaches?

Yes, as a longer day. Tell us in your request and we confirm one fixed price by email. The D-Day beaches also have their own private day trip from Paris.

Can we see Mont Saint-Michel surrounded by the sea?

On some days, yes. The sea reaches the Mont during spring tides, which come about every two weeks, and the strongest arrive 36 to 48 hours after the full and new moons. Check the official tide calendar when you pick your date. The tourist office suggests arriving two hours before high tide to watch the water rise.

Can we walk across the bay to Mont Saint-Michel?

Only with a certified guide. The tourist office warns that quicksand makes it extremely dangerous to venture into the bay alone, even close to the Mont. Guided walks range from a short quicksand discovery of about two hours to the full pilgrims’ crossing. Book directly with a certified guide if you want to try one.

Do people still live on Mont Saint-Michel?

Yes. Mont Saint-Michel is a real French commune, with a mayor, a priest and a postman, and around twenty people live there. Most visitors come for the abbey, but the Grande Rue and the walls around the village below it are free to walk and well worth the time.
