The short answer

How long does it take from a London airport to central London?

The drive from Heathrow to central London takes 35 minutes at its fastest hour (01:00) and 68 minutes at its slowest (08:00) on a September weekday, according to 384 Google Routes API predictions collected by Tripyana. Gatwick ranges from 77 to 132 minutes, Stansted from 64 to 111, and Luton from 51 to 81.

35 minFastest run in the study: Heathrow to Park Lane departing 01:00
132 minSlowest run: Gatwick departing 07:00 on a weekday
+55 minBiggest swing between best and worst hour: Gatwick
±30 minMost predictable airport across the day: Luton

Most airport pages quote a single “35 to 45 minutes” figure. Nobody tells you that the same road can cost you twice that at the wrong hour. This page fixes that: one table per day, one column per airport, one row per hour, colour-coded so a traveller, a journalist or a hotel concierge can read it in ten seconds. The end point is Park Lane, W1, the Mayfair hotel strip where most of our Gulf and business guests stay.

Findings

What the numbers say about London airport traffic

  • The best hour is between 01:00 and 03:00 for every airport. Night and very early arrivals get the road almost to themselves: Heathrow 35 min, Gatwick 77, Stansted 64, Luton 51.
  • The worst hour is 08:00 at Heathrow and 07:00 at Gatwick. An arrival that lands into the morning peak adds 33 minutes at Heathrow and 55 at Gatwick compared with the same drive at night.
  • Gatwick has the biggest swing (77 to 132 minutes). Luton is the most predictable, moving only 30 minutes across the whole day.
  • Saturday is not free of traffic. The Saturday average is 44 minutes from Heathrow against 45 on the weekday, and Gatwick’s Saturday peak still reaches 123 minutes at 12:00.
  • Leaving central London for a flight is slower than arriving. The weekday drive out to Heathrow peaks at 57 minutes (17:00) and to Gatwick at 115 minutes (16:00).

Two patterns stand out. The morning peak hits the airports on the west and south (Heathrow and Gatwick) hardest, because their routes end on the A4 and A23 approaches into the West End. Stansted and Luton arrive from the north on the M11 and M1, where the evening peak matters more than the morning one.

Rule of thumb from the table: for a weekday morning flight, a Heathrow departure from Mayfair needs 57 minutes at the worst hour (17:00), Gatwick 115 minutes (16:00), Stansted 103 (16:00) and Luton 82 (16:00). A pre-booked car with a fixed fare removes the incentive to cut it fine, because the price does not change with the traffic.

What the data means for each London airport

Heathrow: 16 miles, 43 minutes on an empty road

On the weekday the quickest departure is 01:00 (35 min) and the slowest 08:00 (68 min); the day averages 45, the Saturday 44. Heading out from Mayfair, the 17:00 run peaks at 57 minutes.

Heathrow is the shortest drive and the most exposed to the morning peak on the M4 and A4. Landing between 06:00 and 09:00? The immigration queue and the road both peak together, which is why a meet and assist escort saves more time here than anywhere else.

Fixed-fare Heathrow transfer to your hotel

Gatwick: 57 miles, 85 minutes free-flow

Best weekday hour 03:00 at 77 min, worst 07:00 at 132 min, average 93; Saturday averages 90. Leaving Park Lane for Gatwick, budget 115 minutes at 16:00.

Gatwick is the longest drive of the four by miles and the most affected by the A23 and Croydon approach in the evening. The M23 itself is rarely the problem; the last eight miles are.

Stansted: 41 miles, 77 minutes when clear

Weekday range 64 (02:00) to 111 (07:00) minutes, mean 82; the Saturday mean is 78. Outbound to Stansted the peak is 103 minutes around 16:00.

Stansted arrivals come down the M11 and the A406 or the A10. Evening arrivals from 16:00 onwards are the ones to plan around; overnight it is the most predictable of the four routes.

Stansted transfer with flight tracking

Luton: 33 miles, 60 minutes off-peak

Between 51 minutes at 02:00 and 81 at 07:00 on the weekday (average 61); Saturday average 58. From Mayfair to Luton allow 82 minutes at 16:00.

Luton is the M1 run. The road is quick outside peaks, and the Luton Airport to London train competes well in the morning peak for solo travellers; a family with cases still saves time door to door by car.

How we measured London airport journey times

  • Source: Google Maps Platform Routes API, computeRoutes, routing preference TRAFFIC_AWARE_OPTIMAL, driving mode, one request per departure hour.
  • Sample: 384 predictions: 4 airports × 24 hours × 2 days (Tuesday 15 September 2026 and Saturday 19 September 2026) × 2 directions. Requests were made on 8 September 2026 for those future departure times, so each figure is Google’s prediction from its historical traffic model, not a single live reading.
  • Points: Heathrow Terminal 2/3 pickup, Gatwick South Terminal forecourt, Stansted terminal forecourt, Luton terminal forecourt; central London is Park Lane, W1 (Marble Arch and the Mayfair hotels). Distances are routed road miles.
  • What it excludes: time inside the terminal, immigration and baggage, walking to the car, and the Heathrow terminal you actually land at (Terminal 4 and 5 add 5 to 10 minutes of airport roads).
  • Colour bands: green means the drive is within a fifth of the free-flow time, amber up to 1.6 times it, red beyond that. Free-flow is Google’s staticDuration for the same route.
  • Limits: a prediction is an average for that hour; roadworks, accidents and weather move any single journey. Tripyana chauffeurs re-route live on the day. The raw CSV is linked below for anyone who wants to check or extend the numbers.

Questions

Frequently asked questions about airport to central London journey times

What is the fastest hour to drive from Heathrow to central London?

Departing at 01:00 on a weekday, when the drive to Park Lane takes 35 minutes against 68 at the 08:00 peak. Anything between midnight and 05:00 is close to the free-flow time. If you land in the morning peak, expect the road and the passport hall to be busy at the same time.

How long does it take from Gatwick to central London by car?

Between 77 and 132 minutes on a weekday depending on the hour, with a Saturday average of 90 minutes. The M23 is usually clear; the delay builds on the A23 through Croydon and Brixton into the West End, so evening arrivals should allow the higher figure.

Is the Heathrow Express faster than a car to central London?

To Paddington, yes: the train takes 15 minutes at any hour. Door to door it depends on where you are going. A car to a Mayfair hotel is 35 minutes at night and 68 in the peak, and it carries you and your luggage to the door with no change at Paddington, which matters for families and business travellers with cases.

When should I leave central London for a morning flight from Heathrow?

Allow 57 minutes for the drive at the weekday peak (17:00), then add your airline’s check-in cut-off and security time. Before 06:00 the drive drops to about 34 minutes. A pre-booked chauffeur with a fixed fare will plan the pickup from these figures rather than from the free-flow time.

Which London airport is closest to central London by road?

Heathrow at 16 routed miles to Park Lane, then Luton at 33, Stansted at 41 and Gatwick at 57. Closest is not always quickest: at 08:00 on a weekday Heathrow takes 68 minutes, while Stansted at its best hour takes 64. Match the airport to the hour you land, not only to the distance.

Can journalists and bloggers reuse this data?

Yes. The tables, the summary figures and the raw CSV are free to reuse and quote with a link to this page as the source. The data is Google Routes API prediction data collected and processed by Tripyana Ltd in September 2026; please keep the dates and the Park Lane end point when you cite a figure.
